AUSTRALIAN BASS
Bass fishing requires unique gear. Shorter length rods are typically used when you are fishing in tight cover. Those rods are finesse yet powerful, so typically fishing around 2-5 kilo class. Spin rods work great, and bait casters are also excellent options tuned into spinnerbaits, surface lures, and swimbaits. Pair the rod with a 2000 or 2500 reel spooled with 6-12 lb braid and 1 rod length of equivalent fluorocarbon leader. The line and leader are stronger than you would expect, but you’re often fishing in areas with heavy snags, and the lines can be easily compromised. This may be up against tree branches, submerged logs, or overhanging shrubs.

AUSTRALIAN SALMON
There are many options depending on how you target Australian Salmon. You may cast 3 and 4-inch soft plastics, metal slugs or baits in surf, estuary and inshore waters by land, kayak or boat. I love catching Australian Salmon by casting 4-inch soft plastics like Berley Gulp Minnows. For this, a rod 7 feet in length paired with a 2500 or 3000-size reel is perfect. It’s lightweight and can easily cast soft plastics and lightly weighted metal jigs. This setup works great when fishing from the beach, pier, rock wall, kayak or boat. If you need to cast baits out in heavy surf and keep your rod above the crashing waves, you will consider a longer rod with a stronger kg capacity. The same applies should you need extra casting distance for heavier lures such as metal slugs over 30 grams. Before picking an outfit, have some thought about how you are going to fish, where you are going to fish and what you’re going to cast that will make the process so much easier.

BREAM
Bream fishing is all about finesse, which should consist of a light spin rod around 7 feet in length with a 1–3, 2-4 kg capacity, paired with a 1000, 2000, or 2500 size reel spooled with 2-6 pound braid and 1-rod length of equivalent fluorocarbon leader. There are many different ways to target bream ( soft plastics, hard body lures, crabs, surface lures & bait ), which will impact your rod and reel choice. These days, there is no shortage of options in the bream market, and many rods are designed for certain fishing applications. Fast-action rods for soft plastics, slow-action for lures, shorter rods for structure, and crystal tips for bait. Here are our recommendations.

CARP
Carp may be considered a noxious pest but they are still fun to catch. Their size will vary greatly in different systems but in many waterways around Australia, they can grow up to a meter in size. Because of this, we will go heavier with our gear choices. It’s important to highlight that you don’t need expensive gear to target carp. On most occasions a fiberglass or spin rod that 3-5 or 4-6 kilos between 7 or 8 feet in length will work great. Now there are exceptions to this as you can also target carp using coarse fishing techniques with long nibble tip rods and you can also catch them with soft plastics lures using gear similar to targeting flathead. But for the most part here are our recommendations.

FLATHEAD
The humble flathead is a popular bread-and-butter target species that’s fun to catch and great to eat. A 7-foot fishing rod in the 2-4 or 2-5 kilo class is perfect, as they are pretty docile fighters. Paired with a 2500-size reel is ideal. 10-15 lb braid and equivalent fluorocarbon leaders, as they don’t have teeth but bristly mouths that can shred leaders. The same setup can be used for fishing with soft plastics, lures, or bait. (fast-action soft plastics, slow-action lures, and glass or nibble tip for bait ). Suppose you are fishing in the Gippsland region and targeting larger dusky flathead at systems like Lake Tyers or Mallacoota, using larger lures such as big plastics, swimbaits, and jointed lures. In that case, you will need to use a heavier spin rod or even consider a Medium to Heavy baitcaster. Here are our recommendations.

GARFISH
Garfish are an awesome bread-and-butter species accessible from many piers, and jetties or when out on a boat or kayak. Staple baits such as silverfish, maggots, or prawns work great. Using berley will help immensely to bring them in. When land-based fishing for gars you will need an outfit which is very light, whippy, and sensitive. I prefer using slightly longer length rods around 7 foot 6 inches long with a flexible rod tip to help feel and see all those gentle nibbles and inquiries. Here are our recommendations.

GOLDEN PERCH ( YELLOWBELLY )
Golden Perch AKA yellowbelly is a beautiful freshwater fish found in many lakes and systems locally. Gear choices can vary greatly depending on whether you target them with LM spin gear or bait casters. When going with spin gear you want a combination of finesse and power so we typically fish with a 2-5 kilo class rod. Pair the rod with a 2000 or 2500 size reel spooled with 6-12 lb pound braid and 1-rod length of equivalent fluorocarbon leader. Spin rods work great and bait casters are also excellent options tuned for spinnerbaits and vibes.

GUMMY SHARK
Gummy Sharks have become a popular species to target because they have tremendous fighting qualities and taste great. The complex part of choosing appropriate gear for gummy sharks is understanding what size gummy sharks you intend to catch as they can grow up to 20 kilos and you can catch them in a variety of waters ( inshore/offshore ) some calm and some very tidal as well varying depths. For example, if you plan on targeting bigger size gummies in deeper and tidal waters then you will need to fish with heavier gear. Opposed to targeting smaller size gummies in calm waters not greatly impacted by tides and currents you can almost get away with using your snapper gear.

KINGFISH
Kingfish are a strong and powerful fish that grow to impressive sizes and the gear you buy will need to be able to stand up to the demands. There are so many ways to target kingfish and this will impact your buying decision greatly. You can catch them with dead baits, live baits, surface lures, soft plastics, stick baits and vertical jiging. You can catch Kingfish during the warmer months fishing in inshore waters and typically find them offshore in varying depths and tidal flow. All of these factors make choosing the right combo quite challenging. We are seeing a lot more light vertical jigging options when fishing offshore and in the bay lighter spin combos for casting big soft plastics, surface lures and stick baits. Catching them with live and dead baits will always be a good staple choice. Because of all these factors, it is critical to first stop and consider where you will fish, how deep or tidal it is, what size kingies you are expecting to catch and most importantly, whether you will fish with bait, lures or soft plastics.

MURRAY COD
Choosing a Murray cod outfit can be so challenging because the sizes of these freshwater giants vary so much, and the zies and the weight of the lures also vary greatly. This will depend on where you are fishing, your lure choices, and your technique. If you are fishing with lures, then a bait-caster combo is a must. They are tuned for casting swimbaits, hardbodies, spinnerbaits, cranks, big surface lures, and more. This will also give you the control needed to cast towards the structure where Murray cod like to reside. A good starting point is to look at the weight of the lures you plan to use and pick a rod that has a lure weight class that matches. If you bait fishing, you can easily use a spin rod, like a 4-8 kilo rod paired with a 4000-size reel. Here are some great recommendations.

SNAPPER
There are so many snapper rods in the market these days. These are split into multiple categories BAIT and LURE rods, with light and heavy lure rod options. Generally, they all share several common characteristics. Length between 7-8 feet and weight class between 4-7 kilos. Years ago, we would have seen heavier outfits than 4-7 kilos, but we’re seeing a trend of anglers fishing even lighter now. Bait rods have a flexible tip so you can easily see bites and full handles to sit in rod holders, whilst snapper soft plastic rods are light and stiff with a fast action to set soft plastics when you strike, as snapper have strong mouths. Here are our recommendations.

SQUID
Squid fishing has grown in popularity significantly over the last decade. Using specifically designed light gear capable of casting squid jigs a mile has taken targeting this species to a new level. Squid rods are generally longer and built with an extremely sensitive blank that allows you to feel hits and cast squid jigs at reasonable distances. There are many custom squid rods and reels on the market specifically designed for this purpose. Pair that with a 2500 or 3000 lightweight high-speed reel to give you the comfort to cast all day and greater control.

TREVALLY ( SILVER )
In Australia, there are many different species of Trevally. Some of these are prized sports fish that grow into large sizes like the GT ( Giant Trevally ). However typically in our local waters, we are catching silver trevally which grows to 60 cm. These silver trevally are great fighting fish that love high-running water and will happily take a variety of soft plastics, lures, and baits. You want a rod that is finesse yet powerful so typically fishing around 2-5 kilo class. Spin rods work great paired with a 2000 or 2500-size reel spooled with a 6-12 lb pound braid and 1-rod length of equivalent fluorocarbon leader. Here are our recommendations.

TROUT
A 7-foot fishing rod that’s 2-4 or 2-5 kilo class is perfect for trout in most situations. Light enough so you can cast all day, good at casting lightly weighted soft plastics and hard body lures a good distance, and solid enough to handle trout which can grow to good sizes and fight hard. Paired with a 2500-size reel is perfect. 6-12 lb braid and equivalent fluorocarbon leaders. The same setup can be used whether you are fishing with soft plastics, lures, or bait. (fast-action soft plastics, slow-action lures, and glass or nibble tip for bait ). Before picking a rod give real thought to whether you are most likely to be fishing with bait, soft plastics, surface lures or hard body lures as rods are built specifically for these fishing applications. Now if you are fishing in shallow streams and skinny water such as alpine country then you may prefer a shorter length rod around 6 feet and a 1-3kg rod. Here are our recommendations.

TUNA
Recommending gear for Tuna is quite a complex task because they vary so much in size and in technique caught. You can target small ( 10-40 kg ) school tuna using spinning gear or you can target big ( 100 kg + ) barrel tuna using heavy overhead gear. You can also catch them in a variety of ways from throwing stick baits and poppers to trolling skirts. It means before buying gear for Tuna you really need to know how you’re going to target them and what size you are really targeting. Here are our recommendations.

WHITING
Whiting is a favourite table fish and fun to catch. The majority of whiting fishing is done with baits like squid and pipis, so having a slightly longer rod around 7.5 feet long with a flexible rod tip will help greatly to see all those gentle nibbles and inquiries. With the rapid growth of circle hooks, the whiting will hook themselves when using the right gear. Outfits for whiting can differ significantly depending on the tide and current strength. For example, fishing at Port Phillip Bay, a light nibble tip is perfect; however, at Western Port, you will need something heavier that won’t snap when using large sinkers. Targeting whiting with soft plastics is also growing in popularity. Again, a 1-4, 2-4, or 2-5 kilo class rod, approximately 7 feet in length, will be perfect for this. Here are our recommendations.
