I’m a passionate angler, but equally passionate about the environment, and I’m always conscious of the impact left by fishing. Over the years, I have collaborated with key fishing and environmental groups on many habitat, restoration and stocking projects, as well as advocating for sustainable fishing practices. I have lived my fishing journey with the motto of “leave it as you found it”. Lead-free jig heads are a concept I have followed overseas for some time now, and I’m excited to see Ark Genesis implement this in Australia. There are two offerings available: the Tournament Pro series and the Atlas Pro Series. Both engineered from a high-density Ecoryllium a tungsten based alloy which is 100% lead free and non toxic.

From a fishing perspective, the Pro Series has a look and shape comparable to other jig heads we commonly use today. However, these jig heads are slightly smaller and thinner, and have four embedded keeper spikes on top to prevent your soft plastic from slipping. These jig heads are versatile and suitable for various fishing situations, making them ideal for light inshore fishing, particularly when targeting species such as snapper, flathead, Australian salmon, and more. The Atlas Stone Series is a finesse-style jig head, featuring an almost nostalgic look with its small profile and rounded head, taking inspiration from older-generation, rounded jig heads that have proven so effective. These are perfect for finicky bream, bass, estuary perch and freshwater for trout and redfin. They have a fine wire hook and single wire keeper.
Both the Pro and Atlas series are sleek and well-crafted, with each model carefully weighted and shaped to achieve precise fall rates, optimal hook orientation, and responsive strike conversion. Being made from Tungsten Alloy, they are heavier and more durable. This also allows them to be smaller, thinner, and cast and sink with precision.
From an environmental perspective, having lead-free jig heads is a game-changer. It shows a commitment to more environmentally friendly and sustainable products. Now I’m no health expert, but lead-based products are being phased out in many areas. Historically, high exposure to lead is known to have both detrimental physical and mental effects on humans. You can read more about that here. It is also known to harm the environment by contaminating soil, water, air, plants and animals. Read more about the negative impacts of lead on the environment here.
The packaging is 100% recyclable and designed with a concept that prevents all the jig heads from falling out when you open them, a common issue with most jig head packaging on the market. However, I’d love to see the packaging improved and much smaller to be an eco-friendly powerhouse. Ark Genesis assures me that those changes are coming. The good news is that the product development is coming with whispers of colour jig heads as well as additions of eyelits for assist hooks and stingers.
