Welcome to the Best Fishing Piers in Melbourne and Victoria article by FishingMad. Land-based fishing is extremely popular in Melbourne and Victoria. We have many piers along the Mornington Peninsula, Bellarine Peninsula, and Port Melbourne. I have spent a lifetime land-based fishing in our wonderful state, and these are, in my opinion, the best piers to fish on locally. If you need more suggestions, head to our Fishing Location Guides, which have over 200 fishing locations to sink your teeth into.
Lorne Pier

Lorne Pier is a brilliant land-based fishing destination roughly 2 hours drive from Melbourne. It was initially built in 1879 but completely refurbished in 2006. Seasonally, you can catch snapper, Australian salmon, squid, silver trevally, gummy sharks, flathead, and more. You can fish here with baits or flicking soft plastics. The pier is quite elevated from the sea level, which is needed due to large waves and swells on windy days, so you may require a long net or crab pots with ropes to lift your catches.

What’s not to like about a pier that’s over 900 meters long and the longest public pier in our state. In 2018, this pier received a 4.8 million dollar overhaul, making it a wonderful fishing destination. This is a prime land-based fishing spot for squid, snapper, king George whiting, flathead and seasonally even has a run of kingfish. This pier is roughly 2 ½ hours drive from Melbourne heading towards Gippsland.
Lagoon Pier

Lagoon Pier was built in 1889 and is only 20 minutes from the Melbourne CBD. This is a great area for land-based fishing, with Lagoon Pier very close to Princess Pier, Station Pier, Kerferd Road Pier, and St Kilda Pier. However, locally around Melbourne, Lagoon Pier is one of the best locations to catch snapper as we head towards Summer. Here, you can also catch Flathead, King George whiting, squid, Australian salmon, and gummy sharks. You can fish here with bait and soft plastics.

Flinders Pier is a brilliant land-based fishing spot roughly 1 ½ hours drive from Melbourne. It provides anglers with excellent fishing at the heads of Western Port into the bass straight. It’s a well-designed pier with plenty of room to fish and good amenities. It’s very popular throughout the year for squid with a perfect ecosystem, including shallow scattered reefs and weed beds. It’s also great for snappers, King George whiting, trevally, and gummy sharks. This pier can be fished with both baits and soft plastics.
