Top 10 Trout lures in 2024

Daiwa Double Clutch

Daiwa Double Clutch

  • Performance
  • Price
  • Features
  • Durability

These lures were designed for bream and flathead in estuaries, particularly shallow flats. The Daiwa double clutch hard body minnow lures are one the most popular lures on the market and equally as good for targeting trout. Great for walking the banks, casting from a boat or yak. They cast well and have a really nice action in the water ( twitching and darting ), whilst diving down to a good depth for trout.

These lures have a strong swimming action, and a great colour range and are available in multiple sizes including ( new 48mm ), 60mm, 75mm, 95mm, and 115mm. The 75mm is a great general-purpose size for trout. It weighs 5 grams and dives to 1.5 meters deep. There are 29 available colours and some of our favourite colours include ghost wakasagi,  laser perch, kamawutu. These lures work exceptionally well on trout and can be worked with a slow continuous roll or by twitching. The darting action is strong with innovative tungsten sliding weight transfer system and unique bib design and slender profile causes the lure to track straight and deep.

The new versions have revised hooks Owner ST-36BC trebles and a silent Gravity Oscillation System (S-GOS) with its internal dampening washers keeping lure noise to a minimum. These are widely available from most fishing shops and online stores and retails on average for $25.

Good Alternatives include YoZuri Pins Minnow, Bullet 5-0 minnow, Savage Gear 3d prey minnow

OSP Bent Minnow 76

OSP Bent Minnow

  • Durability

Specs – OSP Bent Minnow 76 | Length: 76mm | Weight: 4.3g | Type: Floating

Released way back in 2009 the OSP Bent minnow continues to be the industry standard when it comes to surface lures. I like to fish these over weed beds and on first light as trout are eating off the surface.

These pencil baits have a strong swimming action and are ideal for a whole range of fish species including trout. The unique bent shape mimics a wonder minnow on the top of the water column. With a darting 3D action that naturally sways from left to right. This creates movement, splashing and noise to attract nearby trout. It’s best to mix up the retrieve. Generally, cast, wait for the ripples to disperse then peel in some line and stop. The action is always different on these lures so there is no exact technique

There are 24 colours available our favourites include P-74 and P-83.

OSP Bent minnows are widely available from most fishing shops and online stores and sell on average for $34. It’s a steep price to pay however these lures offer great versatility and can be used on many species in a variety of fishing methods.

Berkley t-tail minnow

Berkley T-Tail minnow

  • Performance
  • Price
  • Features
  • Durability

The Berkley T-Tail minnow paddle tail is a great soft plastic choice when targeting trout. Available in 2.6 inch and 3-inch sizes and 5 realistic colours. Including Pink glow, green pumpkin, olive pearl, bronze pearl and our favourite black/gold sparkle. As the name suggests the T-Tail paddle tail has a really strong swimming action and the rounded profile allows for easy rigging of this plastic.   and Redfin loves soft plastics and the Zman Slim Swimz paddle tail is one of the very best options. These soft plastics have been very popular amongst bream fisherman however they are equally as effective on redfin and now available in colours and sized perfectly for targeting reddies. Some of our favourite redfin colours include motor oil, calico candy, electric chicken, mood ring and UV pink. We have fished both the 2.5-inch size and 3-inch size with great success.

All Berkley’s Powerbait products have a unique scent and flavour of their own which appeal to the fish and compel them to take a bite. These plastics mimic a baitfish and have a strong tail action and can be fished in a variety of ways including a simple slow roll or fished with lifts and pauses. We have done well rigging these with 1/8 jig head and 1/12 hws jig heads in shallow waters. These plastics offer great versatility and can be used on many species in a variety of fishing methods. However, the best thing about these plastics is the price point at $9 per packet which includes 12 soft plastics provides anglers with remarkable value.

Strike Pro Bob n Spoon

Strike Pro Bob n Spoon

  • Performance
  • Price
  • Features
  • Durability

These spoons are fantastic, 7 grams so they cast well, but they are slow sinking. Really strong darting action in the water. I fish them with a slow continuous roll, or twitches and pauses

Specs – sinking, 7.3 grams, 5.5 cm long, 1 single treble, Downer ST36 trebles size 8, 12 available colour options natural and brights in UV and non UV.

The strike pro Bob n Spoon is a great option for trout and significantly cheaper than other trout spoons on the market. Weighing 7.3 grams these spoons cast a long way, yet has a very slow-sinking action to keep the spoon in the strike zone. This means this can also be worked really well in shallow water situations. The treble surprisingly sits on the front of the lure, however, the action on these spoons is fantastic doing a simple slow roll at a slow or medium pace they reminded me of a Bent Minnow or a Tassie devil as it darted from side to side. This was all to do with the hollow moulded plastic design which feels strange in your hand but fishes well.

These are widely available from most fishing shops and online stores and sell on average for $14 which is cheaper than other metal spoons on the market.

There has been a little variation to the design of this old-time classic which is still as popular today as it was many years ago. these lures look great and have a strong swimming action which is irresistible to many fish species, especially trout.

There are several options in the range however it really comes down to whether you need a floating ( F series ) or sinking lure ( CD – countdown ). Both of which are valuable in different fishing situations. The F series working exceptionally well in shallow streams. Whilst the countdown series a great option in slightly deeper water or along with the structure. These lures are made from Balsa Construction with natural minnow profile, have Stainless Steel Through Wire Construction, Hand Tuned and Tank-Tested and finally fitted with quality VMC hooks

These are widely available from most fishing shops and online stores and sell on average for $15. Best Trout Lures 2021.

Specs – Floating | Jointed | Made in Japan | 50mm length | 2.8g weight | 1m depth

The split joint lures was a fad that comes and goes from time to time. However, the Daiwa DR jointed 5F minnow is one of our favourite lures in shallow lakes and streams.
