Werribee River Murray Cod. I was taken back by a photo sent to me by local fishing guru Danny Nguyen early December 2020 holding a beautiful Murray cod from the Werribee River. That’s right the Werribee river. I have fished this stretch of river for many years catching countless estuary perch, redfin and carp and the odd bass in the upper reaches above the weir wall. But never had I seen anyone catch a Murray Cod here. Sure, it’s not the worlds biggest cod but its so pleasing to see this suburban river flourishing. The cod was caught during the evening on a 1/8 jig spin finished with a Daiwa Bait Junkie paddle tail. Danny did a wonderful job to handle the cod with care and release it back in the water. Over the years the growth sizes of estuary perch and bass here have generally been quite small and a long slow burn but Cod would take this area to the next level. The fishing will be amazing here in years to come and should be an agenda item for local fishing bodies to coordinate better fishing access for land-based anglers and kayaks. Looking at providing locals with safe kayak access.

Do take care though snakes are very active here at the moment. I had several encounters this past month and one that was way to close for comfort. Almost stepping on a very sizable tiger snake whilst walking with my 7-year-old boy.
