Top 10 redfin lures in 2024

Nories Wasabi spoon

Nories Metal Wasaby Spoon

  • Performance
  • Price
  • Features
  • Durability

These metal spoons were released on the market several years ago and designed for vertical jigging in deep water for species like bass. However, they make excellent redfin lures as they cast a mile which is awesome for land-based anglers fishing in large open lakes. They come in a range of sizes and shiny colours which redfin responds really well to. Many of the biggest redfin I’ve ever caught is thanks to this lure. The range was refreshed in 2021 with new colours and pressed dimple design labeled hammered.

These spoons come in an extensive colour range some of our favourites include BR-2, BR-18, BR-139 shiny colours that will really get the attention of a passing English perch. The available sizes include 4 grams, 8 grams, 12 grams, 18 grams. we have also done quite well attaching stinger hooks to the front clip. These spoons are a simple design that has a subtle wobbling action. I’ve caught many redfin by casting and doing a slow continuous retrieve, particularly with the 8 gram and 12-gram versions.

A few things with these lures to keep in mind.

  • Check the lure weight capacity of the rod you’re fishing with. Just to ensure you’re not going to compromise your rod tip fishing with a lure that’s heavier than the capability of the rod.
  • The metal spoons come with a single large treble hook. Now I don’t mind this as I’m generally targeting bigger size redfin when using this lure, however, you may want to consider downrating the treble size, or even putting on singles or stinger hooks which works really well.
  • The spoons don’t have a split ring on the end, so when tying these lures onto your leader I would recommend using a loop knot or a lure snap swivel, which is going to be more secure and give the spoon more action.

The only downside to these lures is the cost of $20 each on average. It’s a steep price point to pay for such a simple lure yet its results are excellent on big redfin.

Strike Tiger 3 inch curl tail in bright colours

Grub style soft plastics are widely available on the market. It’s a saturated space and most of the major fishing brands have their own take on this type of soft plastic. I really like the Strike Tigers 3 inch curl tail grubs for 1 particular reason, they have designed a few unique and very bright colours that redfin responds really well to. Particularly the bright orange colour called “Vodka n Orange”, the bright yellow colour called “Banana shock”, and the bright pink colour called “Princess”. The action and durability of these soft plastics are similar to a Zman grub, Berkley power grub. It’s just those colours that stand out which makes them an excellent choice. They do come pre-scented but the smell isn’t obvious when you open the packet. A good way to really jazz up these lures is to rig them on a jig spinner or Colorado-style jig which really helps to add some flash and movement.

Duo Realis spearhead Ryuki

There are many wonderful minnow style hard body lures on the market that works well for redfin. The Duo Realis Spearhead Ryuki hard body lure is an excellent choice for redfin. It’s a beautifully designed lure, that looks great and has a strong swimming action. I like using this lure on my kayak casting towards the banks or along structure or trolling it at the back at a nice slow pace. When targeting redfin we like the 60S a sinking style that weighs 6.5 grams and sinks to 1-3 feet deep. The 70MDF sizes weigh 5.4 grams and sinks to 3-4 feet deep. As well as the 50MDF that weighs 3.4 grams and sinks to 3-4 feet These various options will allow you to cover shallow and deeper waters.

These hard body lures have a stunning shimmering finish and some of our favourite colours include Wakasagi, Yamam redbelly. The lure employs a magnet-assisted weight system guaranteeing maximum cast performance. The only downside to these lures is the cost and $25 for a minnow style hard body lure is a steep price point and there is some stiff competition in that space.

Samaki Vibelicious Fork 70

Samaki Vibelicious

  • Performance
  • Price
  • Features
  • Durability

The Samaki Vibelicious is another excellent option. It has a realistic design and movement which mimics the action of a baitfish really well. There are 2 available options in the range the Vibelicious forktail which is available in 5 sizes ( 70mm, 85mm, 100mm, 125mm, 150mm ) and then there is the Vibelicious thumper available is in 3 sizes ( 70mm, 100mm, 125mm ).

These vibes are effective on a whole range of freshwater and saltwater species. When specifically targeting redfin, I really like the 70mm forktail. The vibes are made from stretchy material which is surprisingly durable and matched with heavy-duty split rings and VMC hooks.

There are 30 colours available which is a good mix of realistic and artistic designs. Redfin is cannibal predatory fish and I particularly like the realistic colours of the redfin and mullet options work really well. These vibes can be fished in a variety of ways. The most effective way I have found is doing continual lifts and pauses in open water or along drop-offs. When you lift the rod tip you up get that really strong vibrating action in the water. You can also slow roll these vibes or troll them at a medium pace.

These are widely available from most fishing shops and online stores and retails on average for $18. It’s a steep price to pay however these lures offer great versatility and can be used on many species in a variety of fishing methods.

Tasmanian Devil Blade and Spoon

Tasmanian Devil Blade

  • Performance
  • Price
  • Features
  • Durability

The tassie devils lures were designed specifically for targeting trout. They have been around for many years and had next to no changes in their design time because of their sustained success in lakes, creeks and rivers on trout but also redfin, yellow belly and estuary perch.

However, in 2020 these lures took on some new variations with the addition of a Spinner Blade and Spoon option. The Spinner blade is an excellent option in shallow waters available in 2 sizes 3.8gms and 5.4gms and 10 different colours. Whilst the Spoon gives you greater casting distance available 7.5gms, 9gms and 12.5gms also in 10 colours, however, one side of the spoon is coloured whilst the other side has a polished shiny gold colour which works well to attract freshwater fish. in A lot of the colours are designed of rainbow and brown trout colours and patterns.

The blades swim really well in the water providing action and resistance you can really feel as your working your reel. Whereas the spoons dart from side to side as you work them with continuous action. The blade provides a distinct action as it spins through the water. Custom Tasmanian Devil paint designs have been created specifically for freshwater species particularly redfin. Each lure is equipped with a quality terminal tackle and VMC treble hooks.

The great thing about these lures is the price at $6.99 they are a significantly cheaper option to other spoons and blades in the market but the results are as good.

Z-Man Slim SwimZ

Zman Slim SwimZ redfin

  • Performance
  • Price
  • Features
  • Durability

Zman Slim Swimz is one of the best paddle tail soft plastic on the market. These soft plastics have been very popular amongst bream fisherman however they are equally as effective for many saltwater, estuary and freshwater fish species and really effective for specifically targeting Redfin. The soft plastics are available in 2 different sizes and 22 different colours. Some of which are perfect for specifically targeting redfin. I really like the 3-inch slim swimz in bright colours. Some of my favourite colours include motor oil, calico candy, electric chicken, mood ring and UV pink. We have fished both the 2.5-inch size and 3-inch size with great success.

The best thing about these soft plastics is the strong swimming action and realistic look which mimics a baitfish so well. They can be fished in a variety of ways including a simple slow roll or fished with lifts and pauses. Generally, I will rig these with a 1/8 or 1/12 hws jig heads which work remarkably well in shallow and weedy waters. I also like rigging these soft plastics with a size 2 jig spinner in brass/gold colour or a size 1 colorado jig head which adds extra flash and vibration.

These soft plastics are very durable with Zmans e10X Tough ElaZtech construction which have proven time and time again to be more durable than other soft plastics in the market. I will often have a fishing session only using 1 soft plastic. At $10 per packet which includes 8 soft plastics, it is a mix of great affordability and versatility that can be used on many different species and fishing methods.
