Albert Park Lake Fishing

Albert Park Lake

Albert Park is a truly underrated urban fishing location only kilometers away from the Melbourne CBD. Its a nice size lake spanning almost 5 kilometers alongside the famous Grand Prix track and Golf course. The lake itself is quite shallow being 1 to 2 meters deep in most areas with the odd occasional deeper hole. Over many years it has been heavily stocked with golden perch and rainbow trout. It's a challenging fishing destination that greatly rewards those who put in the time and effort with trophy size Golden Perch and monster size Carp. A touch of local knowledge is essential here with much weed and shallow water making it a tough location to master.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

estuary perch, golden perch, rainbow trout, mirror carp & European carp. ( Trout yearling often stocked during school holiday programs )

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Lip less Crank-baits and Blades are a great choice here which will grab the attention of perch and carp. As the lake is shallow and quite weedy mid diving hard-body lures are a great all round choice which allow you to target multiple species. Some examples would include the ecogear SX40 or Atomic Crank. I have also found Lightly weighted grub style soft plastics to do well on estuary perch, carp and trout. When bait fishing the humble scrub worm with as little weight possible is best, and Corn kernels will always grab the attention of some big carp.

ROD SETUP

If your fishing with lures then I would recommend a medium spinning outfit as you will come across weed, snags and the odd large carp as a by catch. A 2-4 kilo rod coupled with a small size reel such as a 2500 size with 8 pound line is a great choice. If your bait fishing for big carp then you will want to have a medium 4 - 6 kilo bait rod spooled with heavier line.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Albert Park lake can fish well all year round. The Perch are more likely to bite in warmer months and Trout in Colder month and the Carp all year round. Your always likely to get more bites on sunrise and sundown but with some effort on any given day or time it can produce quality fish.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

This is a great location to bring the family. The area is usually buzzing with people cycling, walking there dogs or jogging. There is a wonderful large wooden adventure playground for the kids. There are also sporting grounds, large areas to play ball sports, people rowing. Many suitable areas for a picnic along the lake, flying a kite or feeding the resident ducks and swans. There is paid parking available just keep an eye on the restriction times.

KNOWN HAZARDS

When fishing the biggest hazards will likely be weed and snags in this shallow lake. Always be mindful of the bird life, rowers and many activities going on in this vibrant area. I have removed fishing line and hooks from swans so again please help the natural wildlife where possible.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

FishingMad encourage ‘catch & release’ of all native species to help maintain the water quality within the lake however European Carp must not be returned. Always carry your Victorian fishing license, Vehicle access only in approved areas

Altona Pier Fishing
Fishing for trout

Altona Pier

Altona Pier is a popular spot located along Millers road which was recently featured as a hot spot for rare Pokemon that saw thousands of people gather on the pier with their smart phones and tablets to collect these rare characters. However, Altona pier can be a quality fishing location particularly with its recent addition of a artificial reef located about 50 meters after the end of the pier. Its also closely located to natural reef and rocks which produce good numbers of large snapper in the warmer months. Often anglers will head towards the end of the pier and cast out as far as they can to get their baits around the artificial reef.

VIDEO REPORT OF DESTINATION

https://youtu.be/oFR_Y6XZW9U

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

snapper, flathead, salmon, trevally, mullet, squid, garfish & leather Jackets

BEST BAITS AND LURES

pilchard, Pipi, Raw Chicken, Squid

ROD SETUP

At Altona your most likely to be catching Pinkies and Flathead so you don't want to fish to heavy but need to be prepared for the the odd large snapper. I would suggest a medium to light 8 or 9 foot rod. As suggested above I would go with a light long surf rod and cast from the end of the pier out as far as you can.

Often I will user a running sinker rig to a swivel and 50cm of strong leader finished with a Pilchard tail or small squid head. If you chasing pinkies then a paternoster rig with pilchard, pipi or raw chicken should fish well

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

This spot usually fishes well on the tide change often seeing Pinkies caught on the incoming high tide and flathead caught on the outgoing low tide. But the surrounding areas tend to fish well on dawn and dusk. Many anglers have reported having more success on large Snapper during windy conditions.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

The kids will need to be closely supervised when fishing on the pier. There is a decent drop and the pier can be slippery with anglers often casting quite close to each other. However this is a great place for the family if you intend to also enjoy the beach. Parking during peak of summer can be quite tricky as its a popular area so if your fishing try and get in early.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Often there are rows of anglers so the biggest danger will be avoiding line tangles or walking behind someone who is casting, so be weary of those around you. Also your likely to catch toad fish, stingrays and banjo sharks which are a pest, just make sure you handle them with care ad put them back into the water safely.

Anglesea Fishing

Anglesea

Anglesea is a beautiful township located before the entrance of the great ocean road. It has scenic and clean beaches and estuary systems. It offers a wide range of species that can be caught at the beach or in the estuary. Theres plenty of accommodation available to make this a magnificent location to take the family who can enjoy many of the activities along the beaches and estuaries.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

bream, salmon, snapper, leather Jackets, trevally, gummy shark, garfish, flathead & mullet

BEST BAITS AND LURES

If your fishing from the beach then Prawns, Pippies and Pilchards are a great staple bait. They will allow you to target Trevally, Salmon, Gummy Shark and more,

If your fishing the Anglesea river estuary then good baits to use would include Bread, Pilchards, Chicken, Worms & Maggots. If you want to fish with lures then the squidgee Blood worm wriggler or Zman grub on a light jig head would be a great place to start.

ROD SETUP

If your fishing from the Beach you will want a nice long rod around 9 foot to give you ample casting distance. I would recommend a 6 - 10 kilo capacity rod to allow you to take on some bigger species.

If your fishing the estuary then go as light as possible. I prefer a 7 foot rod 3 kilo capacity with a 2500 or 1000 reel if your flicking plastics.

Often I will user a running sinker rig to a swivel and 50cm of strong leader finished with a Pilchard tail or small squid head. If you chasing pinkies then a paternoster rig with raw chicken breast will fish very well

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

If your beach fishing then sunrise and sundown is hard to beat. I would even fish through the night to target Gummy Sharks.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

This is a great spot for the whole family and the kids will love it. You can hire light boats at the estuary entrance of the main street and fish in the boats with your kids. Or you can take them to different stunning beach locations. The kids will love it.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Often there are rows of fisherman everywhere so the biggest danger will be avoiding line tangles or walking behind someone who is casting, so be weary of those around you.

PARKING

Parking is generally reasonably easy, ample parking on main road and most beaches have their own car parks.

Barkers Creek Reservoir Fishing

Barkers Creek reservoir

A small reservoir also known as Harcourt located all the way down the Calder freeway past Bendigo up within the hills between the central goldfileds and orchards of Victoria. Despite its size Barkers creek reservoir can produce quality Redfin and Trout. Often producing quality not quantity.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

redfin & trout

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Scrub worms, Crickets, Power bait, Yabbies, Mudeye. When the water level is high enough and you can get past the weed beds flicking a wide range of spinners, soft plastics & lures can be a great method of catching a prized reddie or trout. Click here to see our best lures and plastics when targeting Redfin.

ROD SETUP

When targeting Trout and Redfin fish as light as possible which will make the experience more fun and improve your chances. Redfin will actively take many baits or lures. To maximize your chances fish with a 2 - 4  or 1 - 3 kilo rod. The main line spooled with 4 pound braid finished with a good quality leader.

This is also a terrific spot for fly fisherman who can drift nymph flies with great success for trout.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Any time of day, though some fish will be more active at Dawn and Dusk

FAMILY FRIENDLY

Its a lovely scenic area, probably not a great amount of things to keep the kids occupied. So if your taking the family maybe keep the fishing to short sessions and enjoy the surrounding views, orchids and townships.

KNOWN HAZARDS

As with all country rural areas always be mindful of snakes.

Barwon Heads Fishing

Barwon Heads

The very beautiful and scenic Barwon heads is a quality fishing location. From land-based there's an abundance of small fish that can be caught all year round and fishes particularly well in the winter months. Many spots to target include the beach, Barwon heads bridge, the boat ramp, the golf course and sheep-wash road.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Salmon, Mullet, Trevally, Whiting, Flathead, Gurnard, Mulloway, Crabs

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Pilchards, Squid, Maggots, Scrub worms, Chicken.

Soft plastics such as Z-man grubs and turtle back worms also work very well.

ROD SETUP

There's a lot of small fish so I like to fish with a very light rod setup I prefer a 1 – 4 kilo capacity, with a 2500 reel. It needs to be sensitive to see the bites and inquiries. Usually a very simple and light running rig or a small paternoster rig does the trick in this location. Using burley really does help keep the fish around.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

You can catch fish here at any time, but I generally would always suggest at dawn and dusk. Ideally an hour on either side. Some will fish through the night chasing the prize of a mulloway.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

This is generally a great spot for kids. I like fishing directly on the beach where the kids can run around and play in the sand and shallow water whilst some rods are setup ready for a fish to strike.  They certainly don't get bored fishing like this.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Not a lot of hazards but the beaches can get crowded, so you'll just want to be careful and make sure your keeping safe distance of those playing on the beach, swimming or paddle boarding.

I haven't seen any snakes in Barwon heads but closer to Geelong along the Barwon River you need to be extremely careful as Tiger snakes are very common around this area. I have bumped into a few Tiger snakes in this area along the way and urge people fishing the Barwon river to be careful and always wear strong protective gumboots and pants.

Beaumaris Jetty Fishing

Beaumaris Jetty

Beaumaris jetty is small jetty along beach road, this jetty is more known for its garfish and squid offering in seasonal parts of the year. Its a great year round fishing location offering a whole range of species to target.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Garfish, Squid, Whiting, Salmon, Bream, Snapper, Flathead, Mullet, Banjo

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Pilchard, Blue Bait, Silver Whiting, Raw Chicken, Squid. Or a range of squid jigs and soft plastics

ROD SETUP

This is quite tricky as there are many different species to target. Species like Bream, Whiting and Garfish need light delicate rod setups, whilst Snapper and large Salmon schools will require heavier gear. This might be a great spot to take a general purpose rod. Something between 7 to 8 foot in a 3 to 5 kilo class allowing you to quickly change rigs and baits. How several anglers they will be specifically targeting squid particularly in the colder months, for this an light 8 foot egi rod is an ideal setup.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

This spot can fish well all days however the tide change can make a big difference so check the tide times before fishing. Often your session will fire up on the peak of each tide. Squid fishing is often at its best here during the winter months.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

The kids will need to be closely supervised when fishing on the pier. There is a decent drop and the pier can be slippery with anglers often casting quite close to each other. I have seen people accidentally hook others when casting without looking behind them, this is a narrow pier so always be careful of those around you.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Often there are rows of fisherman so the biggest danger will be avoiding line tangles or walking behind someone who is casting, so be weary of those around you. Rays and Banjos can be common here which is more of a pest then a danger.

Bemm River Fishing

Bemm River

Beyond lakes entrance and Marlo lies the Bemm river which is a beautiful location and very well known as an amazing bream fishing destination. Here you will have a great chance to land yourself a trophy sized bream either along the Sydneham inlet or in the main river itself. This is the sole reason why they host ABT and Hobie fishing tournaments here regularly.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

bream, flathead, dusky flathead, trevally, taylor, estuary perch, luderick

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Sand worms, maggots, scrub worms, pilchards, mussels, yabbies, & chicken. Click here to see our full guide for bait fishing for Bream.

The choice of lures is endless. Some of the best options include Cranka Crabs, Z-man grubs, EcoGear ZX, VX, SX Range, Strike Pro Hummer, Jackall Chubby, Atomic Hardz, Berkley Big Eye blades & 3B crank, Gulp Nemesis, Hurricane Vibe, OSP Bent Minnows with many more options.

ROD SETUP

For flicking lures and plastics you cant go past a light spinning rod around 7 foot in length with a 1-3 kilo class or 2-4 kilo class. There are so many great options to choose from in this range which can be quite confusing for beginners. When choosing a reel 1000, 2040 or 2500 size is best, spooled with 4-6 pound braid and finished with a 2 or 4 pound leader.

For bait fishing again a light rod setup is best. A 2-4 kilo class rod with a 2500 size reel would be a great option spooled with 6 pound line. Beginners can go a little heavier with a 3-5 kilo rod.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Any time of day, though some fish will be more active at Dawn and Dusk

FAMILY FRIENDLY

There are lots of good accommodation spots for the family. There are also a number of great fishing platforms and jetties and nice spots along the beach towards the river mouth channel.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Always be careful when the river entrance opens. During this time the tidal flow can be very strong and quite dangerous. Like all rural areas always take notice of areas that might hold snakes.

Blue Rock Lake Fishing

Blue Rock Lake

Blue Rock lake located in Gippsland Victoria is roughly 90 minutes from Victoria. Its a beautiful fishing destination with amazing views of Mount Baw Baw. Originally build to supply drinking water to the Latrobe Valley the river is now common to anglers, kayaks and boaters in chase of Aussie Bass, Redfin, Trout and Carp. For many anglers this is a great spot to target Bass. With recent boating restrictions changed to the lake fishing here is going from strength to strength. Stocking programs are in full swing which will have amazing bass fishing for years to come. This is a great place for Kayakers with access from the main boat ramp near the damwall of spillway road.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Aussie Bass, Redfin, Trout and Carp

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Surface lures and poppers are a great choice when targeting aussie bass. The thrill of catching one on the surface is truly amazing. Scrub worms, crickets, maggots, power bait. Minnow and grub style soft plastics work well for most species. Surface lures and poppers are a great choice when targeting aussie bass. The thrill of catching one on the surface is truly amazing. Bass will often surface to feed on Grasshoppers and Cicadas so you will find many lures that will mimic this.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

A beautiful location close to Mt Baw Baw. There are several nice accommodation offerings in the immediate area. A great spot to take the kids and unplug.

Bostock reservoir Fishing

Bostock Reservoir

Bostock reservoir is located of Shaws road exit towards Ballan and on your way to Daylesford. Its a challenging fishing destination which can see you put on much effort to sometimes get little reward. After some years of very low water levels bostock is once again near capacity and fishing well. Its stocked regularly with rainbow trout and has nice bbq area which means its a good family fishing destination.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

healthy number of both rainbow trout and brown trout, lots of small redfin, goldfish, carp & eel

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Scrub worms, Crickets, Power bait, Yabbies, Mudeye. When the water level is high enough and you can get past the weed beds flicking a wide range of spinners, soft plastics & lures can be a great method of catching a prized reddie or trout. MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

In the colder months your likely to see trout surfacing at bostock in the early morning. So my recommendation in winter would be to fish the sunrise. In the warmer months the redfin get active in the late afternoon when the temperature is at its warmest.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

Its a great spot for the family with open grounds and BBQ's. I have often taken the family there to explore the area then settle down to some fishing and kite flying with a bbq

KNOWN HAZARDS

There is plenty of snake signs around Bostock reservoir for good reason, so when walking around please be weary of brown and tiger snakes. I have seen the odd snakes driving into the main entrance area.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

No fishing with waders fishing only permitted from the shore, No boats, No cleaning of fish onsite,  Always carry your Victorian fishing license, Using berley is not permitted, FishingMad encourage ‘catch & release’ of all native species to help maintain the water quality within the lake however European Carp must not be returned.

Brighton Breakwall Fishing

Brighton Breakwall

Brighton Breakwall is a beautiful and very popular fishing location. It can produce quality fish all year round but can provide spectacular Snapper fishing in the summer months

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Snapper, Flathead, Squid, Whiting, Garfish, Bream, Salmon, Trevally, Mullet

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Squid, Pilchard, Blue Bait, Silver Whiting, Raw Chicken, Squid, Maggots. Or a range of squid jigs and soft plastics

ROD SETUP

This area is rocky so casting out a far distance is key to get your baits in the prime location for a bite. I would suggest a medium to light surf rod between 8 to 10 foot. Your also likely to catch many small Pinkies and Flathead so you don't want to fish to heavy but need to be prepared for the the odd large snapper. Often I will user a running sinker rig to a swivel and 50cm of strong leader finished with a Pilchard tail or small squid head. If you chasing pinkies then a paternoster rig with raw chicken breast will fish very well

However if your chasing Garfish or Bream you will be fishing much lighter with a 2 to 4 kilo rod with small hooks. Or casting with plastics or imitation crabs around the pylons and moored boats.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

If your chasing big snapper then fishing dawn or duck on the incoming high tide will be your best chance especially when the wind is chopping up a little

FAMILY FRIENDLY

This is a beautiful spot but the kids will need to be closely supervised. Its narrow with many anglers casting and the rocks can be slippery

KNOWN HAZARDS

Slippery rock wall and many rods being cast in a condensed area so be mindful of others casting around you and expect to bring lots of spare line and hooks for all the snags

Brimbank Park Fishing

Brimbank Park

Brimbank Park is park located around Keillor which is better known for its walking and bike trials. It does however have a picturesque river that runs through it providing anglers with some big size carp and redfin.

scrub worms, corn, bread. Soft plastics & lures can be a great method of catching a prized reddie or trout. Click here to see our best lures and plastics when targeting Redfin.

ROD SETUP

It all depends what your targeting. If your chasing carp then a 2 - 8 kilo rod with a 3000 or 4000 size reel is very appropriate. When targeting Redfin fish as light as possible which will make the experience more fun and improve your chances. Redfin will actively take many baits or lures. To maximize your chances fish with a 2 - 4  or 1 - 3 kilo rod. The main line spooled with 4 pound braid finished with a good quality leader.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Can be fished anytime of day with success.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

The new range of Savage Gear swimbaits are also a great option for the larger species

ROD SETUP

To maximize your chances fish with a 2-4 or 1-3 kilo rod and a 2000 to 2500 size reel spooled with 4-6 pound braid finished with a quality fluorocarbon leader. When targeting golden perch ( yellow belly ) it pays to fish a little heavier therefore a slight upgrade to a 2-4 or 3-5 kilo rod coupled with a 2500-3000 reel reel loaded with 6 or 8 pound braid. If your sight are set on catching a big cod then you'll need to up your outfit. A 6 foot to 7 foot rod in a 4-8 kilo or 6-12 kilo class rod and a quality baitcaster reel spooled with 20 to 50 pound braid finished with a solid fluro carbon leader of equal strength. There are a whole range of baitcaster options suiting different budgets. An affordable starting point would be a either a Savage Gear black savage bait caster rod and reel combo or a shimano raider cod 642 with a Casitas baitcaster reel.

Again you can catch all these different species during any part of the day, though some fish will be more active at Dawn and Dusk.

Calembeen park is located in the lovely rural town of Creswick next to the local caravan park. This is a great tranquil spot with picnic grounds and close the local wool mills. Its also nice and close to surrounding areas Ballarat and Daylesford and an ideal fishing location for the family.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

rainbow trout, redfin, tench, yellow belly. The trout are occasionally stocked during school holiday programs.

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Scrub worms, Crickets, Power bait, Yabbies, Mudeye. A wide range of spinners, soft plastics & lures can be a great way of catching a prized reddie or trout. Click here to see our best lures and plastics when targeting Redfin.

Dawn and dusk great options but will fish well most hours of the day.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

There are picnic grounds with BBQ's and toilet facilities. Its a lovely scenic spot to take the family and kids for a picnic lunch and fish. There are also available water activities in the smaller lakes.

KNOWN HAZARDS

As with all country rural areas always be mindful of snakes.

Campbells cove Fishing

Campbells cove

VIDEO REPORT OF DESTINATION

https://youtu.be/Jo6RQitXlsk

Located between Werribee South and Point Cook is Campbells cove which is well recognized for its beach huts and squid fishing. Whilst fishing in this location you will often be greeted by overhead flying planes from the nearby RAAF base. However this location can supply the odd prized size calamari or snapper, and is a great spot for drifting for flathead.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Squid, Pinkies, Flathead, toadies, banjos

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Squid jigs, Pilchard, Mussels. fresh squid. I have also fished very well here using a range of 3 inch and 4 inch soft plastics. Particularly minnow style, grub style and curl tails. Just bouncing them of the bottom and pausing then continually repeating the process.

ROD SETUP

This might be a great spot to take a general purpose rod. Something between 7 to 8 foot in a 3 to 5 kilo class allowing you to quickly change rigs and baits. How several anglers they will be specifically targeting squid particularly in the colder months, for this an light 8 foot egi rod is an ideal setup.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Anytime of the day is fine, however dawn and dusk can be more active

FAMILY FRIENDLY

Not really the best place for the kids. They can play on the sand but there isn't much to do in the immediate area. You would be much better taking the kids a little further up to the Werribee beach which has playgrounds, toilet facilities and better beach areas.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Toad fish ( puffer ) and banjos are quite common in this area, which are more often a pest opposed to a danger.

Canning Reserve Fishing

Canning Reserve

Canning Reserve is located at Avondale Heights and is a wonderful urban fishing destination. Its a top choice to take children to to learn how to fish with playgrounds, running areas and an abundance of small Bream and Mullet on offer.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Bream, Mullet

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Scrub worms and Maggots are very effective baits for Bream and Mullet in this area. I have also seen many other anglers using Pilchard strips, Bass Yabbies & Chicken strips.

Soft plastics and Blades are also good in this area but very prone to snags and rubbish on the surface. I had some success using Zman grubs and blood worm squidges, and some success with the range of Berkeley big eye blades casting as close to structure and retrieving slowly for best results.

ROD SETUP

If fishing with lures and plastics I would recommend a very light rod partnered with a 1000 or 2500 spinning reel. If fishing with bait I recommend a 7 foot rod 1 – 4 kilo capacity, with a 2000-3000 reel. It needs to be sensitive to see the bites and inquiries. I usually go with a 40cm leader around 6 pound to a swivel, then above having a very small running ball sinker on your main line. This allows the bait to move freely and fussy Bream to not be frightened off.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

You can fish this system anytime and produce good results. Sometimes the best time to fish is during overcast conditions where the Bream seem a little more confident.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

One of the best kid friendly areas you will find. There's a large playground, walking tracks, football oval, toilets and plenty of area to run around. This is an ideal location to take your youngsters to fish.

Not to many Hazards to be concerned about, but if you plan to venture into the more rugged area then do be careful of snakes.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

carp, mirror carp, eels & redfin

Corn, Bread, Maggots & Powerbait. A simple running sinker with little weight is a great as its a very shallow system. So is fishing using a float and suspending your baits. Generally have only seen people bait fishing at Cherry Lake.

ROD SETUP

Your mainly going to be catching carp at Cherry lake and they can grow very large. Therefore if your chasing Carp then a 3-6 kilo rod coupled with a 4000 size reel is very appropriate. I would recommend 8 pound line and leader, you can go a little stronger.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Most freshwater species have a tendency to feed more aggressively at Dawn and Dusk. My personal favorite is fishing the sundown particularity in the warmer months. This is often when you see Carp near the edges and jumping out of the water.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

Cherry Lake is a very kid friendly place with the large adventure playground, walking tracks, picnic areas, BBQ's and ducks ready for a feed.

KNOWN HAZARDS

I have heard several encounters between anglers and Tiger snakes, so be careful and wear appropriate foot wear. If you see a Tiger snake don't approach it. I have also seen huge swamp rats.

Corniella Pier Fishing

Corinella Pier

Corinella pier is a popular fishing destination found within Western Port that offers good fishing all year round. Its a nicely constructed pier that stretches out far and turn right at the end which is great for anglers to spread out and fish in deeper areas. Towards the end of the pier most anglers will be fishing around 5 meters in depth on a sandy flat bottom with most casting in the direction of settlement point.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Gummy Sharks, Elephant Fish, Trevally, Whiting, Baracouta, Flathead, Salmon, Sting Ray, Mullety, Leather jacket

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Squid, Pilchard, Trevally, Salmon,, Blue Bait, Silver Whiting, Pippis. Remember when pier fishing to use a berley bucket to try and attract the fish to you.

ROD SETUP

This very much depends on what species of fish your targeting. If your chasing the larger species such as Gummy sharks or Sting Rays then your going to need a nice heavy outfit. My preference for this is a 8-12 kilo rod and a 4000-6000 reel spooled with 20 pound line. A single large hook or double snelled hook to present a full squid or pilchard. Sometimes I will also chase these species my with Snapper rods which are a 5-8 kilo rod with 12 pound line. This is a fun way of targeting these fish that might get busted off occasionally.  If your chasing lighter fish that dont require gear as heavy such as elephant fish, flathead, trevally or whiting then a nice light general purport 2-4 or 3-5 kilo with a 2500-3000 reel spooled with 6 pound line will work well.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

This is a great winter location for elephant fish and salmon, but it fishes well for most parts of the year. If your keen to land a gummy shark then fishing throughout the night will be the best bet as thats when predatory fish are most active. Always keep an eye on tide tide early morning high tide is always great along piers and jettys.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Paternoster rig works well with sinker options to suit your desired casting distance. Soft Plastics and Blades will work well pinkies, flathead, bream, mullet and Trevally.

ROD SETUP

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

I prefer most spots around Geelong in the early morning. High tide usually sees a big run of pinkies in summer, and low tide generally produces a healthy amount of flathead.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Trout and Redfin are notorious for feeding more heavily at Dawn and Dusk. My personal favourite is fishing the sundown.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

There are terrific spots for the kids that have picnic grounds and playgrounds such as Lake Jubilee, Pykes creek & Calembeen Park. They will keep the kids occupied even if the fishing is quiet.

Devil Bend is a terrific fishing destination with newly established fishing pontoons and platforms. Devil bend has been heavily stocked with trout since 2012 making it a great location to target a trophy size brown or rainbow. With picnic grounds it s a great fishing location to take the family.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

redfin & trout

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Scrub worms, Crickets, Power bait, Yabbies, Mudeye. If you can get past the weed beds flicking a wide range of spinners, soft plastics & lures can be a great method of catching a prized reddie or trout. Click here to see our best lures and plastics when targeting Redfin.

Docklands Fishing

Docklands

Docklands is a great fishing location so close to Melbourne. It offers anglers with a  wide variety of species to target and techniques to master. Its a great spot for Anglers chasing Bream within structure and pylons and seasonly has a run of Snapper and Mulloway. You can fish from the piers and jetties or even casting out towards the Bolte Bridge

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Bream, Snapper, Trevally, Mulloway, Flathead, Mullet, Garfish, King Fish

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Soft plastics and Blades are great in this area, where you can accurately cast your lure of choice very close to structure and strike zone. If your bait fishing then live maggots, Pilchards, Squid, whiting fillet and Chicken are good options n this area.

ROD SETUP

There are so many techniques on offer at Docklands. If targeting species such as Bream or silver Trevally then a light 7 foot rod is best. If bait fishing it would be good to experiment with a using a float to avoid snags and a light leader. Again when fishing lures and soft plastics a light yet stiff 7 foot rod is an ideal choice allowing you to get your plastics or blades in the right zone. Then there is the other extreme were serious anglers targeting Mulloway would select a very heavy rod, a large reel spooled with 100 pound braid using live mullet as the bait of choice. Again there are so many options so don't be afraid to experiment with what works for you.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

High tide is always preferable for me at the Docklands, The rising tide brings fish into feed on the structure. Sunrise and sundown are always favorable but not a necessity in this area unless you plan to chase Mulloway which are much more active at night.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

This is great spots for kids. There are lots of different locations to fish within a small area and cafes and shops are close by so should the bite not be on you can go and do another activity for a while and later come back to the fishing.

KNOWN HAZARDS

This biggest issue at the Docklands will likely be getting your lines snagged and needing to re-rig up. This will happen when fishing close to the structure and getting bites and just generally some times so go prepared, and don't let a bust of to a good fish break your spirits as thats to be expected in this area.

PARKING

Parking at the docklands for fishing can be a little tricky. There are some free parking spots towards North Wharf road but they fill up very quickly. In most cases will cost you around $15 and you may be forced to carry your fishing gear amongst the crowds shopping or going to the footy.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

Only 2 fishing lines permitted, Always carry your Victorian fishing license, and always follow catch limits. Where possible we encourage catch and release.

Erskine River Fishing

Erskine River

The Erskine River is a small water system located at the entrance of Lorne. It's a very scenic area with lovely walking tracks, bridges and entrances to the Lorne Beach. Its very easily accessible and you will often see campers along this river strip with rods setup outside their tents and Vans. The river is murky but chock full of small Bream and Mullet. A great fishing spot is at the entrance near the bridge above or further down near the weed beds.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Bream, Mullet & Estuary Perch

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Scrub worms and Maggots are very effective baits for Bream and Mullet in this area. I would commender using small hooks as there are many small Bream in this area. I have also seen many other anglers using Pilchard strips, Bass Yabbies & Chicken strips.

Hard Body lures are a great choice as the water is shallow and a floating hard body will allow you to cast right amongst the snags. I had some success fishing with Atomic crank, Hurricane twitch 50 and Nories Minnows. Soft plastics and Blades are also good in this area but very prone to snags. I had success using Zman grubs and squidges.

ROD SETUP

If fishing with lures and plastics I would recommend a very light rod partnered with a 1000 or 2500 spinning reel. If fishing with bait I recommend a 7 foot rod. I prefer a 1 – 4 kilo capacity, with a 3000 reel. It needs to be sensitive to feel the bites.

Sometimes the best time to fish is during overcast conditions.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

This is a nice scenic area. The kids would thoroughly enjoy the walk up and down the wooden walking paths, bridges and playgrounds along the area. And the beach is a small walking distance away.

KNOWN HAZARDS

There are many signs around the area warning of hazardous bacteria in the water. So it would be best not to eat anything caught out of the Erskine River and to wash your hands thoroughly after fishing this area.

PARKING

Parking is available in the information outlet car park just as you head into the Lorne township or opposite La mantra accommodation resort.

Flinders pier Fishing

Flinders Pier

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Pilchard, Blue Bait, Silver Whiting, Raw Chicken, Squid. Or a range of squid jigs and soft plastics

ROD SETUP

If your chasing squid then a light 8 foot rod with several squid jigs is the goto option. For other fishing a medium to light surf rod between 8 to 10 foot. Your will catch many small fish such as leather jackets but need to be prepared for the the odd large fish such as a Trevally, snapper or Shark. Often I will user a running sinker rig to a swivel and 50cm of strong leader finished with a Pilchard tail or small squid head. If you chasing pinkies then a paternoster rig with raw chicken breast will fish very well

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Fishing dawn or dusk on the incoming high tide will be your best chance especially when the wind is chopping up a little

FAMILY FRIENDLY

This is a beautiful spot with surrounding beaches and rock pools but the kids will need to be closely supervised when on the pier.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Many rods being cast in a condensed area so be mindful of others casting around you

PARKING

Ample parking is available in front of the pier

Frankston Pier Fishing

Frankston Pier

Frankston pier has always been a popular fishing destination that offers a good range of fishing species for anglers all year round. A vibrant location that has a lot to offer in the surrounding areas. An artificial reef was recently established by the DEPI towards the end of the pier which will offer great fishing in years to come.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

garfish, salmon, snapper, trevally, flathead

BEST BAITS AND LURES

When targeting garfish glassies and silver fish are great options. Also small pieces of pilchard or chicken. For other bigger species Pilchards, Chicken, Squid, Maggots. Soft Plastics and Blades when fished from certain jetties and piers also work a treat for pinkies, flathead, and Trevally.

Paternoster rig works well with sinker options to suit your desired casting distance.

ROD SETUP

If targeting garfish a very light  8 foot rod with a 1-3 kilo rod with a 2000 reel is ideal. Then suspending your baits from a float and hook small enough to fit in a gars mouth. otherwise an all-round rod setup which will allow me to target a different range of fish and sizes. Usually 2 – 8 kilo class rod capacity, with a 4000 size reel. I'll generally have line around 8 pound, with a nice strong leader.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

I prefer most spots on piers in the early morning. High tide usually sees a big run of pinkies in summer, and low tide generally produces a healthy amount of flathead.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

A great family location with ample parking, toilet facilities, near by playgrounds and restaurants.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Often there are rows of fisherman so the biggest danger will be avoiding line tangles or walking behind someone who is casting, so be weary of those around you. Rays and Banjos can be common here which is more of a pest then a danger.

Geelong Fishing

Geelong

VIDEO REPORT OF DESTINATION

Snapper ( pinkies ), Flathead, Salmon, Whiting, Snot nose Trevally, leather-jackets, Mullet, Gummy Shark

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Pilchards, Chicken, Squid, Maggots,

Soft Plastics and Blades when fished from certain jetties and piers also work a treat for pinkies, flathead, mullet and Trevally.

Paternoster rig works well with sinker options to suit your desired casting distance.

ROD SETUP

I generally use an all-round rod setup which will allow me to target a different range of fish and sizes. Usually 2 – 8 kilo class rod capacity, with a 4000 size reel. I'll generally have line around 8 pound, with a nice strong leader.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

I prefer most spots around Geelong in the early morning. High tide usually sees a big run of pinkies in summer, and low tide generally produces a healthy amount of flathead.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

There are some good spots to fish with the kids. However if your fishing of a pier or jetty make sure you keep a close eye on them and make sure you keep them amused. If you're not catching they'll likely get bored pretty quickly so take some extra stuff to keep them occupied.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Last season I caught 2 nasties when fishing near Cunningham pier, surprisingly my first nasty was catching a 2 meter brown snake who had nibbled at my pilchard. It gave me a hell of a fright. I can only imagine it had a nice hiding spot amongst the timber of the pier. The other nasty was a scorpion fish. I have seen people catch these and curiously hold to find out what type of species of fish it is. This is very dangerous and a small prick from one of its spikes will have you in hospital with severe pain. So do be careful if you don't know what type of species it is, then ask someone around you before handling.

Goulburn River Fishing

Goulburn River

The Goulburn river is a large stretch of waterway in Nothern Victoria around Shepparton, Seymour, Alexandria and Nagambie. It holds great numbers of Redfin, Golden perch, Cod and lots of Carp.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Murray Cod, Golden Perch, Trout, Redfin, Carp

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Scrub/earth worms, Power bait, Yabbies, Mudeye and a wide range of soft plastics & lures. Click here to see our best lures and plastics when targeting Redfin. If your targeting cod and yellow belly then some great lure choices would includes lip-less crank-baits such as Jackall TN series, stump jumpers which can be cast or trolled, surface lures, vibes, spinner baits, bassman spinners, large grub style soft plastics in dark colours. The new range of Savage Gear swimbaits are also a great option for the larger species

ROD SETUP

When targeting Trout and Redfin i would highly recommend fishing as light as possible which will provide you more fun and control.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Spring is the best time of year for targeting golden perch ( yellow belly ) and cod. They can be caught at anytime of the day but often the last 2 hours of daylight can be the best. Trout are more active in the colder months and redfin ( perch ) are more active in the warmer months. Again you can catch all these different species during any part of the day, though some fish will be more active at Dawn and Dusk.

Hanging Rock Fishing

Hanging Rock

Hanging Rock is a beautiful location amongst the Macedon ranges more known for its picturesque walking tracks along the stunning rock formations at the top of the mountain. Its a location for amazing photos, and picnics with the resident kangaroos, birds, lizards and wild life.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

rainbow trout & redfin. The lake is often stocked with trout during school holiday programs.

Its a lovely area, with stunning views, photo opportunities, walking trials, open picnic grounds amongst the kangaroos and birds. You can enjoy the surrounding views and challenge yourself to climb to the top.

KNOWN HAZARDS

As with all country rural areas always be mindful of snakes.

Hastings Pier Fishing

Hastings pier

Hastings pier can be found in Hastings along Skinner street which can produce all year round fishing.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

whiting, salmon, trevally, snapper, flathead

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Pilchards, Chicken, Squid, Maggots. Soft Plastics and Blades also work a treat for pinkies, flathead, and Trevally. Paternoster rig works well with sinker options to suit your desired casting distance.

ROD SETUP

I generally use an all-round rod setup which will allow me to target a different range of fish and sizes. Usually 3–5 kilo class rod capacity, with a 3000 or 4000 size reel. I'll generally have line around 8 pound, with a nice strong leader.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

High tide usually sees a big run of pinkies in summer, and low tide generally produces a healthy amount of flathead.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

There are near by parking and bbq facilities. Make sure you keep a close eye on the kids them and make sure you keep them amused. If you're not catching they'll likely get bored pretty quickly so take some extra stuff to keep them occupied.

KNOWN HAZARDS

I have seen people catch these and curiously hold to find out what type of species of fish it is. This is very dangerous and a small prick from one of its spikes will have you in hospital with severe pain. So do be careful if you don't know what type of species it is, then ask someone around you before handling.

Hepburn Lagoon Fishing

Hepburn Lagoon

Hepburn Lagoon is a lovely stretch of water located between Kingston and Blampied notorious for good trout fishing in winter and solid redfin fishing in summer. Its a challenging location that is often fished well by fly fishermen.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Redfin, Eels and Carp.

BEST BAITS AND LURES

As mentioned above fly fishing is a great option at this location. Mudeye on a float is a great choice when targeting trout in Hepburn lagoon. Other good options include scrub worms, power bait, yabbies and a wide range of soft plastics & lures. Click here to see our best lures and plastics when targeting Redfin. The old humble tassie devil can go quite well in this area.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Trout and Redfin are notorious for feeding more heavily at Dawn and Dusk. My personal favourite is fishing the sundown.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

Not a great deal for the family to do in this spot. If you have young kids then look at places such as Jubille Lake which offer fishing with playgrounds and BBQ's

KNOWN HAZARDS

It gets bitterly cold in Hepburn lagoon during winter. I can remember being in the lagoon wearing waders with the temperature below 1 degree. So remember to wear thermals and keep warm. Snakes can be located in these areas. Tiger snakes, Brown snakes and Red Bellied Black. Best bet is to wear protective gumboots and strong fabric pants.

Hopkins River Fishing

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Bream, estuary perch, Mulloway, flathead, mullet

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Maggots, Scrub worms, Pilchards, Mussels, Yabbies, Chicken. A very simple running rig with a small sinker to swivel, then 45cm leader to a small hook.

The best choice of lures is endless. Some of the best options include Cranka Crabs, Z-man grubs, EcoGear ZX, VX, SX Range, Strike Pro Hummer, Jackall Chubby, Atomic Hardz, Berkley Big Eye blades & 3B crank, Gulp Nemesis, Hurricane Vibe, OSP Bent Minnows with many more options.

ROD SETUP

A very light rod setup is best. I prefer a bream rod 1–3 or 2-4 kilo capacity, with a 2000-3000 reel. It needs to be sensitive to see the bites and inquiries.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Peak of tide changes are the best. With fish more active on tidal movement. High tide is always favorable as the bream will come closer in to feed on the weed of the rock beds.

Jack Roper Reserve Fishing

Jack Roper Reserve

Jack Roper reserve is an interesting fishing proposition which is easily seen when driving on the metropolitan ring rod near Broadmeadows. Its a shallow system stocked with trout but more notorious for the large carp.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Carp, Trout, Redfin, Roach

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Worms, Corn, Bread, Maggots

ROD SETUP

If your chasing Carp then a 3 - 6 kilo rod with a 4000 size reel is very appropriate.

Jan Juc Surf Torquay Fishing

Jan Juc Surf Torquay

Jan Juc is a popular surf fishing location within Torquay opposite the golf course. With its pictures scenery, beautiful beach and great surf, it makes for a terrific fishing location in Winter to target the big runs of Salmon.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Salmon in Winter and in the warmer months Snapper, Gummy Shark and Whiting.

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Blue bait and pilchards are the bait of choice in this area. I generally use a Paternoster rig with a large star sinker to allow you to cast far. The rig will generally be holding 2 full blue baits or 2 half pilchards. You can buy pre made surf popper rigs which are a great choice and ready to be used.

ROD SETUP

At least a 10 foot rod is required to cast far and to keep the line above the crashing waves. A 12 foot rod would be my preference with a 4000 reel spooled with 12 pound line and a string leader.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Its best to follow the tides and the incoming High tide is always good for Salmon. Also sundown and sunrise seem to bring on the bite.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

Jan Jac is a great location for the kids to play on the sand and in the shallows but be warned you can get large waves and a strong rip so you must keep a close eye on them.

KNOWN HAZARDS

The biggest pest in this are is all the dogs running around off leads. I have only fished here a couple of times but on those occasions I've had my bait and even caught fish stolen by dogs. The owners who don't seem to care when a dog goes through your bag and belongings. Its very lucky that dogs who have gone through my bags haven't accidentally hooked themselves which would somehow be your fault. Also watch out for surfers who often stray from the pack and end up close to fishing lines.

Kerferd road Pier Fishing

Kerferd road Pier, Port Melbourne

Kerferd road pier is a great fishing location in Port Melbourne. It can produce a wide range of species for anglers all year round but can provide spectacular Snapper fishing in the summer months

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Snapper, Flathead, Flounder, Bream, Salmon, Trevally, Mullet

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Pilchard, Raw Chicken, Squid

ROD SETUP

I would suggest a medium to light 8 or 9 foot rod. Your most likely to catch many small Pinkies and Flathead so you don't want to fish to heavy but need to be prepared for the the odd large snapper.

Often I will user a running sinker rig to a swivel and 50cm of strong leader finished with a Pilchard tail or small squid head. If you chasing pinkies then a paternoster rig with raw chicken breast will fish very well

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

This spot usually fishes well on the tide change often seeing Pinkies caught on the incoming high tide and flathead caught on the outgoing low tide. But the surrounding areas tend to fish well on dawn and dusk. Many anglers have reported having more success on large Snapper during windy conditions.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

The kids will need to be closely supervised when fishing on the pier. There is a decent drop and the pier can be slippery with anglers often casting quite close to each other.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Often there are rows of fisherman everywhere so the biggest danger will be avoiding line tangles or walking behind someone who is casting, so be weary of those around you.

Lake Mulwala is roghly 3 1/2 hours from melbourne near Yarrawonga. Its a great fishing location with the prized catch along this strip is Murray Cod which can be an illusive giant targeted by many. However there is also a great selection of Golden and Estuary Perch

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Murray Cod, Silver Perch, Golden Perch, Trout Cod, Redfin, Carp

Lake Wendouree Fishing

Lake Wendouree

Lake Wendouree located in the heart of Ballarat is a very large and vibrant fishing location. It’s stocked regularly with Trout and has become a very popular fishing destination in recent years for lure fishing, fly fishing and bait fishing. It however can be a very challenging place to fish but does provide high rewards and trophy size fish. It’s surrounded by Botanical gardens, vibrant bird life, Children’s playgrounds, walking tracks, Sporting clubs and situated close to Ballarat town and show grounds.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, & Redfin. ( stocked regularly with Trout roughly 6000 per year for some time now ).

BEST BAITS AND LURES

I have seen a mix of techniques be successful at Wendouree including Fly fishing. If you know how to fly fish.

Scrub worms, Power bait, Yabbies, Mudeye and a wide range of soft plastics & lures. Click here to see our best lures and plastics when targeting Redfin.

Lakes Entrance Fishing

Lakes Entrance

Lakes entrance is a beautiful location and fishing location all year round located on the east coastline of Victoria. With its scenic sandy beaches and healthy estuary systems this is a lively location only a few hours drive from Melbourne. This is an amazing holiday destination with the family that offers plenty to do and a vast range of species to be target by anglers making lakes entrance a great fishing destination.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Bream, Flathead, Luderick, Snapper, Whiting, Garfish, Mullet, Tuna, Sharks, Salmon, Tailor

BEST BAITS AND LURES

So many options here staple baits would include Pilchards, Chicken, Squid, Maggots, Scrub worms, Mullet. A paternoster rig works well with sinker options to suit your desired casting distance.  Again there are many options specific for certain species. example would be a light spin setup for bream with a range of hard body lures and soft plastics or heavy game outfit for Tuna with a range of skirts.

ROD SETUP

Depends on what you're chasing. In these circumstances its almost good to go with a general purpose rod that allows you to cover many different types of species. In this case a 3-5 kilo rod with a 3000 reel spooled with 6 pound line would be a great option. If you're going for smaller fish then a light rod setup is best. 2–4 kilo capacity, with a 2000-3000 reel which will be sensitive enough to feel small bites and inquiries. If your chasing bigger fish like snapper and Gummy Sharks then you'll want a heavier setup and potentially a long casting surf rod. Something along the lines of an 8 foot 5-8 kilo rod spooled with  stronger line such as 12 pound.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Any time of day, though some fish will be more active at Dawn and Dusk

FAMILY FRIENDLY

Lakes entrance is an exceptional family friendly location. A vibrant township with plenty to do including bike riding, beach safaris, cruises, sailboating and a vast array of accommodation. Lorne Pier Fishing

Lorne Pier

The Lorne pier is situated in-front of the Grand Pacific Hotel. It was rebuilt in 2006 and is a beautifully designed pier that allows you to target many different species of fish. The often blustery & wavy conditions stir up the water bringing many predatory species. The pier seasonally offers different species to target with Salmon often being the prized target during the winter months and Snapper the prized target in Summer.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Salmon, Snapper, Trevally, Baracoota, Gummy Shark, Squid, Garfish, Flathead, Mullet, Rays

BEST BAITS AND LURES

There are many species to target so its difficult to have a go to bait. However the pilchard might be your best bait of choice. Salmon, Snapper, Flathead & Trevally will happily take a Pilchard. In Winter it would also be a good idea to use large metal slugs retrieving them quickly to get an attention of a school of Salmon.

ROD SETUP

Theres a good chance of landing a good size fish so you will want to rig up more heavily in this area a 4 to 10 kilo capacity rod is ideal. Preferably something around 8 foot long to give you good casting ability. I would recommend a running sinker with a hitched pilchard tail.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

High tide is preferable as more species come in to feed from underneath the Pier during this time. The rising tide brings fish into feed on the structure. Species like Gummy sharks and Squid are much more active at night and there is adequate lighting for night fishing. In fact this is a great night fishing location.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

If supervised this can be a nice spot to take the kids. However make sure you keep a very close eye on them. The conditions are usually rough, windy and waves can crash into the pier.

KNOWN HAZARDS

A big issue at the Lorne Pier is the Seals. I have seen them hiding under the Pier on many occasions. They scare away the fish and look for an easy meal stealing your catches. They can easily ruin a nice days fishing. If I see them hanging around I tend to move onto another location.

PARKING

Parking is easy with a car park at the pier entrance of the main road.

Lynch Bridge Fishing Nong

Lynch Bridge

Located along Flemington Racecourse Lynch bridge offers ample parking, structure & plenty of fish species to target. It produces nice numbers of Bream & Mullet and Pinkies in the warmer months. The bridge pylons provides terrific hiding grounds for Bream and the occasional Mulloway. It does however create a strong water flow system. In the warmer months this can be a very popular fishing spot, with masses of people up and down the banks fishing.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Bream, Mullet, Pinkies, Mulloway, Estuary Perch

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Scrub worms and Maggots are very effective baits for Bream and Mullet in this area. Anglers also use Pilchard strips, Bass Yabbies & Chicken strips. Soft plastics and Blades are also good in this area but very prone to snags. I had some success using Zman grubs and blood worm squidges.

ROD SETUP

If fishing with lures I recommend a light rod, partnered with a 1000 or 2500 spinning reel. If fishing with bait I recommend a 7 foot rod. I prefer a 1 – 4 kilo capacity, with a 3000 reel. I usually go with a 40cm leader around 6 pound to a swivel, then above having a very small running ball sinker on your main line. This allows the bait to move freely and fussy Bream to not be frightened off.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

You can fish this system anytime. Sometimes the best time to fish is during overcast conditions where the Bream seem a little more confident.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

This is an OK spot for kids. But you need to be mindful of cars passing in the background distance and strong tidal flow.

KNOWN HAZARDS

The water quality here probably isn't the greatest. There are pipes running from the racetrack to the estuary directly which is waste wash from horses at the race track. There is also a very strong tidal flow particularly after periods of rain.

PARKING

Ample parking available just drive over the bridge and turn left towards the racetrack. Park and fish.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

Only 2 fishing lines permitted, Always carry your Victorian fishing license, and always follow catch limits. Where possible we encourage catch and release.

Malmsbury Reservoir Fishing

Malmsbury Reservoir

Malmsbury River is a popular fishing destination in Kynenton which is 35 klm in length. During the dry months many areas of this fishing hole are unfishable with very low water levels. Its regularly stocked with Trout and a great spot to target Trout and an abundance of Redfin. As this is part of the local drinking water there is no boating or wadding in this River.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Redfin, Carp, Tench & Goldfish

A very light rod setup is best. I prefer a bream rod 1–3 or 2-4 kilo capacity, with a 2000-3000 reel. It needs to be sensitive to see the bites and inquiries.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Peak of tide changes are the best. With fish more active on tidal movement. High tide is always favorable as the bream will come closer in to feed on the weed of the rock beds.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

This is generally a nice and kid friendly location, as the river stretches through many parks and grasslands such as Canning reserve.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Rowers & floating debris are likely to collect your fishing lines. You may also experience frustration as your lines get picked by small bait fish and star fish. The Maribyrnong River is home to 4 species of snake including the Tiger, eastern Brown, Copperhead and red bellied black.

BEST BAITS AND LURES

when bait fishing use sand worms, maggots, scrub/earth worms, pilchards, mussels, yabbies, & chicken. Click here to see our full guide for bait fishing for Bream. Something sensitive to see the bites and inquiries. For carp youl need a heavier 4-6 kilo outfit with 8 pound line.

https://youtu.be/ezlPe8HXQ50

Mornington pier located along Schnapper point drive in Mornington offers a vast array of fishing species to target all year round making is an excellent land based fishing destination.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

squid, whiting, salmon, snapper, silver trevally, leather jacket, rays, garfish

Fishing dawn or dusk on the incoming high tide will be your best chance especially when the wind is chopping up a little. Locals have reported that the best fishing is during the summer and autumn months.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

This is a beautiful spot with surrounding beaches and rock pools but the kids will need to be closely supervised when on the pier.

KNOWN HAZARDS

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Pilchard, Blue Bait, Silver Whiting, Raw Chicken, Squid. Or a range of squid jigs and soft plastics

ROD SETUP

Depends on what you're chasing. In these circumstances its almost good to go with a general purpose rod that allows you to cover many different types of species. In this case a 3-5 kilo rod with a 3000 reel spooled with 6 pound line would be a great option. I would suggest a medium to light 8 or 9 foot rod. Your most likely to catch many small Pinkies and Flathead so you don't want to fish to heavy but need to be prepared for the the odd large snapper. If your chasing squid then a light 8 foot rod with several squid jigs is the goto option. For other fishing a medium to light surf rod between 8 to 10 foot.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Fishing dawn or dusk on the incoming high tide will be your best chance especially when the wind is chopping up a little. Quite often after a couple of days of strong breeze species like snapper will come in.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

This is a beautiful spot but probably not a great location for the kids due to its difficult and dangerous access.

KNOWN HAZARDS

The rocks and cliff face can be very slippery and quite dangerous. Its often quite steep access and care must be taken at all times. Always let someone know your fishing in this area and wear adequate footwear.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Spring is the best time of year for targeting golden perch ( yellow belly ) and cod. They can be caught at anytime of the day but often the last 2 hours of daylight can be the best. FAMILY FRIENDLY

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Redfin.

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Mudeye under a bubble float is a goto here. ideally with the wind and gentle tidal flow behind you to stop your bait coming back to the shallow bank. Scrub worms, Power bait, Yabbies, and a wide range of soft plastics & lures. the old tassie devil and a range of long casting hard body lures such as the bullet 5-0, and rapala countdown series will go well here.  Click here to see our best lures and plastics when targeting Redfin.

ROD SETUP

When targeting Trout and Redfin fish as light as possible which will make the experience more fun and improve your chances. Redfin will actively take many baits or lures. Patterson River Fishing

Patterson River

The Patterson river is a small river that has become a very popular bream fishing destination located in the South suburbs of Melbourne near Carrum. There are many launching areas and jetties which provide good access and structure when fishing. Due to this very reason is why they host ABT and Hobie fishing tournaments here regularly, and why we see many Bream fishing videos and reports generated from this location.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Bream, Flathead, Flounder, Salmon, Mullet, Mulloway, Trevally

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Maggots, Scrub worms, Pilchards, Mussels, Yabbies, & Chicken. Click here to see our full guide for bait fishing for Bream.

The best choice of lures is endless. Some of the best options include Cranka Crabs, Z-man grubs, EcoGear ZX, VX, SX Range, Strike Pro Hummer, Jackall Chubby, Atomic Hardz, Berkley Big Eye blades & 3B crank, Gulp Nemesis, Hurricane Vibe, OSP Bent Minnows with many more options.

Fish the structure and jetties thats were your likely to find the Bream hiding.

ROD SETUP

A light rod setup is best hen targeting species such as bream. I prefer a bream rod 1–3 or 2-4 kilo capacity, with a 2000 to 2500 sized reel.  Something sensitive to see the bites and inquiries.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Any time of day, though some fish will be more active at Dawn and Dusk. The Bream are generally more active in the warmer months

FAMILY FRIENDLY

This is an nice spot to take the kids with plenty of fishing spots with surrounding parks and BBQ facilities. There are also great amenities such as fish cleaning stations, toilets, jetties and multiple launching areas.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Large amount of boat traffic to be cautious of. All rural areas are inhabited by wildlife such as Snakes and Lizards, so be weary of venomous snakes such as Brown, Tiger and Red bellied Black.

Port Phillip Bay Fishing

Port Phillip Bay

The one and only Port Phillip bay is the largest bay in the state and a large ocean area covering southern Victoria. Almost 2,000 square kilomteres in size, this area is extremely popular with boats and land based anglers particularly between the months of October and February looking to catch a prized snapper. There are many popular areas it covers such as Frankston, Mornington, StKilda, Port Melbourne, Altona Williamstown, Black Rock, Werribee, Corio bay, Geelong, Queenscliff and more. The majority of Port Phillip bay consists of a flat sandy bottom with the shallow areas around 8 meters in depth and the deeper sections reaching a maximum depth of 25 meters.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Snapper ( pinkies ), Flathead, Salmon, Mullet, Mulloway, Bream, Gummy Sharks, Trevally, Whiting, squid, leather jacket

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Pilchards, Silver Whiting, Bonito, Chicken, Squid, Maggots, Scrub worms, Mullet

ROD SETUP

Depends on what you're chasing. If you fishing from a boat then an unweighted full pilchard or silver whiting or lightly weighted squid with double snelled suicide hooks is a great option. I would go with a snapper setup which would generally consist of a 7 foot 5-8 kilo rod. This will allow you to target many of the bigger species. Its also good to go with a general purpose rod that allows you to cover many different types of species.

I prefer this spot in the early morning at high tide I just seem to catch more fish in those conditions. You get a big run of pinkies between January and March and a big run of Salmon between June and August.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Always be careful when out on the boat. Make sure you take all the safety precautions and show mother nature the respect it really deserves.

Portland Fishing

Portland

Portland is one of Victoria's first settlements and a great holiday locations. Portland is an iconic fishing destination in Victoria with it's beautifully scenic rock formations and extremely deep waters over 10000 meters deep which offers amazing fishing for many species. However Portland gets its real reputation as a fishing hot spot for its Tuna fishing throughout the winter months. It also offers other great game fishing and large range of species such as King fish and Snapper.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Bluefin Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Albacore, King fish, Mako Shark, Thresher Shark, School Shark, Whiting, Flathead, Snapper, Salmon

BEST BAITS AND LURES

At Portland Tuna will likely be your number one target. In this case you will likely be trolling colorful skirts and waiting for a decent hookup.

ROD SETUP

If your chasing the large range of Tuna or sharks then you will be using a strong game rod with heavy line and a class gaming reel.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Winter is the best time of year to chase Tuna as thats when there active. this is often the time of year when you will see the range of charters and traffic in full swing. Bird activity is often a great indication to a hungry pack of Tuna which are surfacing and on the bite.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

The deep open waters isn't really the place for young kids but there are plenty of spots along the piers, jetties and near by estuaries that would be suitable. Portland is often considered the whale watching capital of Victoria and many families head to Portland during the winter months for some whale watching.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Very deep open waters, always wear safety equipment and always go out with experienced people who can assist you.

Princess Pier Fishing

Princess Pier

Princes pier built in 1920 is an iconic location along Port Melbourne. The pier was closed in 1989 however recently renovated and reopened to the public in 2011 this location is so recognizable as many years back the pier was cut in half leaving in initial pier stumps in the ground which makes unbelievable fishing structure for species like bream and pinkies. From Princess pier you will see the adjacent piers in station pier and kerferd pier, and quite often see the big ships such as the spirit of Tasmania cruising in.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

bream ( the cut pylons produce amazing structure for bream ), snapper, flathead, salmon, mullet

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Pilchards, Squid, whiting fillet and Chicken are my go to bait in this area.

A combination of a simple running sinker setup and a paternoster rig does the trick in this location for many species. Using burley really does help keep the fish around. If you're targeting large snapper and gummy sharks then a full unweighted pilchard with a size 5 Mustad hook is a great way to go.

ROD SETUP

An all-round setup might be a good way to go as you can cover a large amount of species and sizes.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Its best to follow the tides. Low tide seems to bring good runs of Flathead and Salmon and the high tide consistently produces good Bream and Pinkies. I always find first and last light are good times to fish regardless of the tides.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

Its a beautiful and scenic area and great for some photo opportunities. The kids can play in the sandy beach area. However there inst many local food options

Rocklands reservoir Fishing

Rocklands Reservoir

Rocklands is a great fishing location which can be found heading towards the Grampians in the outer parts of Victoria only 10 minutes away form the township of Balmoral. With beautiful scenic views its a great place to take the family, perhaps on your way to visiting the Grampians. Unfortunately drought has been a big issue at this location with water levels reaching very low levels over the last 20 years. However when the water levels are up it offers great trout and redfin fishing.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Sanctuary Lakes Fishing

Sanctuary Lakes

Sanctuary lakes is located 20 minutes west of the Melbourne CBD. Its a interesting fishing location built around the highly acclaimed Greg Norman designed golf course. Its a shallow and weedy lake but holds good amount of bream and mullet. Keep a lookout for signs with several parts of the lake zoned of restricted to no fishing ( generally all the channels ). Its a good location for flicking suspending hard body lures.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

bream, mullet

BEST BAITS AND LURES

A range of hard body lures and soft plastics work really well. Particularly shallow diving suspending lures. My favorites include the Savage Fear Fathead 38 crank, Savage Gear manic shrimp, z-man grubZ 2.5 inch, z-man slim swimZ 2.5 inch, Atomic cranks

ROD SETUP

A light rod setup is best. I prefer a bream rod 1–3 or 2-4 kilo capacity rod with a 2000 size reel. Rods such as the Savage Gear black Savage spin 1-3 with a Savage Gear stealth 2000 reel or Daiwa Gen black Itchy Twitchy 1.5 to 3 kilo is a great choice. Sheepwash road Barwon Heads Fishing

Sheepwash Road, Barwon Heads

Sheepwash road is an interesting fishing location, during the winter months it produces huge runs small Mullet and Samon making it a terrific fishing location to take young kids to learn how to fish.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Salmon, Mullet, Trevally, Whiting, Flathead, Mulloway, Pinkies, Gurnads, Crabs

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Pilchards, Squid, Maggots, Chicken. Soft plastics such as Z-man grubs and turtle back worms also work very well. Usually a very simple and light running rig or a small paternoster rig does the trick in this location. Using burley really does help keep the fish around.

ROD SETUP

There is lots of small fish so make sure your fishing as light as possible with tiny hooks. I like a very light rod setup I prefer a 1 – 4 kilo capacity, with a 2500 reel. It needs to be sensitive to see the bites and inquiries.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

You can catch fish here at any time, but I generally would always suggest at dawn and dusk. Ideally an hour on either side. Some will fish through the night chasing the prize of a Mulloway.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

This is generally a great spot for kids as there are so many small fish and you generally don't need to wait to long to get a bite. The key here though is to fish very light and with very small hooks, as the small Mullet and Salmon don't tend to take a big hook. This will keep the kids busy and they don't get bored fishing like this. It can be slippery after rain or on high tide so be prepared to get muddy.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Not a lot of hazards but it does get very muddy and very slippery. You can catch many crabs here so just be cautious of getting nipped.

Pieces of chicken strip or pilchard are very effective in this area. I have also had success with Maggots..

Soft plastics  also fish very well. To date I have had the most luck with Paddle tails, Zman grubs and blood worm squidges and Gary Glitter squidges..

ROD SETUP

For both methods the best is to fish very light. Small sinker or unweighted. Complemented with a 7 foot 1 -3 kilo capacity rod and a 1000 to 2500 size reel.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

You can fish this system anytime and produce good results. Sometimes the best time to fish is during overcast conditions where the Bream seem a little more confident.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

This is a great spot when fishing with kids. Lots of tidy jetties. Theres a park and BBQ's opposite the Caravan Park and tits a short distance walk from the Beach.

KNOWN HAZARDS

The biggest pest in this area is the weed which seems to find your bait very quickly making it a must to continually check your baits. There is also an abundance of small fish it can be difficult to find the bigger ones.

PARKING

Ample parking available opposite the Caravan Park on next to the Beach.

St leonards Fishing

St Leonard's

St Leonard's is situated in a little township about 45 minutes past Geelong parralelr to Queenscliff. With clear waters, weed beds and fishing in roughly 6 meter deep water it offers a vast array of fishing species to target and excellent land based squid fishing

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Squid, Whiting, Salmon, Snapper, Trevally, Leather jacket, Rays

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Pilchard, Blue Bait, Silver Whiting, Raw Chicken, Squid. Or a range of squid jigs and soft plastics

ROD SETUP

If your chasing squid then a light 8 foot rod with several squid jigs is the goto option. For other fishing a medium to light surf rod between 8 or 9 foot. Your will catch many small fish but need to be prepared for the the odd large fish such as a Trevally or Snapper.

This is a beautiful spot with surrounding beaches but the kids will need to be closely supervised when on the pier.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Many rods being cast in a condensed area so be mindful of others casting around you

Station Pier Fishing

Station Pier

Station Pier is located on beach street along Port Melbourne and is very easily recognized for having the large cruise boats such as the spirit of Tasmania and Navy ships docked against which can be seen from some distance away. Station Pier has changed its access to anglers a lot over the years. Many years back you could drive your car all the way down to then end and fish to your hears content. Unfortunately now you must pay for parking out the front and access through the gates is done during certain hours which has lost a little of the appeal for anglers at this spot. It can produce all year round but can provide spectacular Snapper fishing in the summer months

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Snapper, Flathead, Baracoota, Garfish, Tailor, Flounder, Bream, Salmon, Trevally, Mullet

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Pilchard, Blue Bait, Raw Chicken, Squid

There are nearby walking trials, shops and cafes which make this a decent family location. When fishing the kids will need to be closely supervised on the pier. There is a decent drop and the pier can be slippery with anglers often casting quite close to each other.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Often there are rows of fisherman everywhere so the biggest danger will be avoiding line tangles or walking behind someone who is casting, so be weary of those around you.

PARKING

Paid parking is available though it is quite pricey. Those with a pass or disability are able to drive up towards the end of the pier.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

Only 2 fishing lines permitted, Always carry your Victorian fishing license, and always follow catch limits. Where possible we encourage catch and release.

Its a very popular fishing location and can often you can see rows of overcrowded anglers standing side by side which is prone to line tangling.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

If your chasing big snapper then fishing dawn or dusk on the incoming high tide will be your best chance especially when the wind is chopping up a little. There is good lighting at night time and you will often see many anglers fishing the sundown.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

There are nearby parks and BBQ areas. there is also regular markets and not to far away is the iconic Luna Park so this is a great spot to take the kids. They will need to be closely supervised when fishing on the pier.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Often there are rows of fisherman everywhere so the biggest danger will be avoiding line tangles or walking behind someone who is casting, so be weary of those around you.

Stockyard point Fishing

Stockyard Point

stockyard point has become a hotspot for Elephant fish in recent years and during the winter months this is a popular and often over crowded fishing location. Its also a great location to target gummy sharks and snapper.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Gummy Sharks, Elephant Fish, Snapper, Trevally, Whiting, Baracouta, Flathead, Salmon, Sting Ray,

FAMILY FRIENDLY

The warmies located behind Science-works in Spotswood, is a well known fishing destination that feeds of Port Phillip bay which gets its name from the power station that run occasionally pouring warm water into the surrounding area attracting many size fish like tailor to come in for a look. During these times its not uncommon to see rows of anglers standing against each other keen to get into the action. It's challenging fishing destination with lots of snags but offers a large range of species that can be caught with multiple techniques. Sometimes delivers prized size mulloway and snapper.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

tailor, snapper ( pinkies ), flathead, Australian salmon, mullet, mulloway, bream, gummy Sharks, trevally, whiting

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Pilchards, Chicken, Squid, Maggots, Scrub worms, Mullet

Paternoster rig works well with sinker options to suit your desired casting distance.

ROD SETUP

Depends on what you're chasing. If you're going for smaller fish then a light rod setup is best. 2 – 4 kilo capacity, with a 2000-3000 reel. It needs to be sensitive to feel the bites and inquiries. If your chasing bigger fish like snapper and Gummy Sharks then you'll want a long casting surf rod. You will likely want to spool your rod with stronger line such as 12 pound.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

I prefer this spot in the early morning at high tide. Just seem to catch more fish in those conditions. You get a big run of pinkies between January and March and a big run of Salmon between June and August. If your brave enough to fish through the night then your a good chance to catch a mulloway.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

This is an OK locations for kids. Plenty of grassland to run around on, just need to be careful near the rocks.

KNOWN HAZARDS

The biggest hazards you will face in this area will be snags. You can go There can also be plague proportion of star fish. I have also caught blue ring octopus, and scorpion fish of the jetty both which are very venomous. Also at certain times of the year its common to see plague proportions of jelly fish and large rats.

Tullaroop Creek Fishing

Tullaroop Creek

Around the great Ballarat area you will find Tullaroop creek which was built around 1958. Tullaroop offers great trout fishing in the winter months and those brave enough to endure the frosty winter mornings are often rewarded with a nice brown or rainbow in trophy size. A tip is to walk the banks looking for anything breaking the surface. Fly fisherman will do well here casting flys into that immediate area and waiting for a strike.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Redfin & Trout

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Mudeye under a bubble float is a goto here. ideally with the wind and gentle tidal flow behind you to stop your bait coming back to the shallow bank. Also scrub/earth worms, Power bait, Yabbies, and a wide range of soft plastics & lures. shallow diving hard body lures such as the old rapala countdown series and bullet 5-0 minnow will fish well in this area.  Click here to see our best lures and plastics when targeting Redfin.

Web dock is a interesting fishing location hidden within Port Melbourne. It can produce all year round but can provide spectacular Snapper fishing in the summer months

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Snapper, Flathead, Flounder, Bream, Salmon, Trevally, Mullet

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Pilchard, Raw Chicken, Squid

ROD SETUP

This area is full of rocks that you will frequently snag your line on, so casting out a far distance is key.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

This isn't really a kid friendly location, there are steep rock walls and there isn't a lot of room for playing. It can also be a very difficult spot to bring in a fish with many rocks

KNOWN HAZARDS

Slippery rock wall and many rods being cast in a condensed area so be mindful of others casting around you and expect to bring lots of spare line and hooks for all the snags

Werribee Point Cook Altona Fishing

Werribee, Point Cook, Altona

VIDEO REPORT OF DESTINATION

https://youtu.be/E5d9cCJB05s

Werribee, Point Cook and Altona has a very large stretch of coast full of boat ramps, jetties, rock walls and Piers. It's become a very popular fishing destination particularly when the yearly snapper run comes through.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Snapper, Flathead, Gummy Shark, Squid, Whiting, Mullet, Bream,

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Pilchards, Squid, whiting fillet and Chicken breast. A simple paternoster rig works well in this location for many species. Using burley does help keep the fish around. If you're targeting large snapper and gummy sharks then a full unweighted pilchard with a size 5 Mustad hook is a great way to go.

ROD SETUP

An all-round setup might be a good way to go as you can cover a large amount of species and sizes. I have seen big snapper caught in 3 meters of water. If you're targeting big snapper then fish larger, with stronger line and rod setup.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Sunrise and sundown are terrific times to be out on the boat and ready to catch. However you will catch flathead, squid and pinkies at any time of the day. Having a burley trail will help your chances.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

This is great spots for kids. So many land based beach fishing locations which allows the kids to play on the beach and catch some fish. If you with kids then fish very light and target Mullet and Pinkies which will keep them entertained.

KNOWN HAZARDS

This area is full of Banjo sharks and Star fish. Best bet is to check your baits regularly and be prepared to go through a number of chewed up rigs. I generally have a handful of rigs ready to go for this sole purpose.

Werribee River Fishing

Werribee River

VIDEO REPORT OF DESTINATION

https://youtu.be/E5d9cCJB05s

The Werribee River stretches for over 100 kilometers. Starting as a narrow catchment from Port Philip Bay ( near Werribee boat ramp ) and goes through Werribee and all the way past Bacchus Marsh and Ballan. Depending on where you visit it can be a great salt water, estuary and fresh water location to fish. Its most popular for fishing is around the K road entrance not far from the Werribee golf course where anglers will target Black Bream and prized Mulloway.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Bream, Mulloway, Salmon, Mullet, Trevally, If you move up further into fresh water areas Redfin and Blackfish can be targeted.

BEST BAITS AND LURES

I have found the humble scrub worm to be a very effective bait for Bream in this area. Perhaps because the water can be muddy and murky a bait that has similar colors fishes well. I have also seen other anglers do very well using Pilchard strips, Bass Yabbies & Chicken strips.

Soft plastics and Blades are great in this area, where you can accurately cast your lure of choice very close to structure and strike zone. Be prepared to get snagged up occasionally but the Werribee river has great structure that you can target which is usually home to many Bream.

ROD SETUP

For Bream use a light 7 foot rod 1 – 4 kilo capacity, with a 3000 reel. Something very sensitive to feel bites and inquiries. A short 6 pound leader to a swivel, then above a very small running sinker on your main line. This allows the bait to move freely.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

High tide is always preferable for me, The rising tide brings fish into feed on the structure. Sunrise and sundown are always favorable.  If your chasing Mulloway then perhaps from Sundown to Sunlight are your best times when predatory fish are on the move.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

This is a nice scenic area. The kids would enjoy the walk up and down the cliff side. But do be very careful this are is well known for Tiger and Brown snakes.

KNOWN HAZARDS

2 big hazards to be weary of. As I mentioned above Snakes. I highly recommend wearing strong boots, and solid fabric pants which might just save your life if you accidentally stood on a snake. Again if you have kids don't let them wonder of and keep an eye on them. Always keep a first aid kit handy.

The other hazard is snags and reeds. You will loose fish to both and remember not to use big sinkers which only increase your chances of getting stuck in them.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

Parking is widely available a popular spot to park is above the K road cliffs and walking down the stairs to the river.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

Only 2 fishing lines permitted, Always carry your Victorian fishing license, and always follow catch limits. Where possible we encourage catch and release.

As part of the new Wyndham Harbor establishment this long man made rock wall was only established a few years ago. It does however provide a great fishing opportunity for local land based anglers. It allows you to reach decent water depth and target a range of species.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

7 gill shark, rays, pinkies, snapper, flathead, whiting, squid

BEST BAITS AND LURES

pilchard, chicken, squid. A range of soft plastics will work well here for flathead and pinkies.

ROD SETUP

A heavy to medium rod that allows you to cast a far distance out is preferable. I like to walk towards then end of the rock wall and cast as far out as I can with a full pichard which will allow me to target sharks and snapper.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Night fishing at this spot is a great choice if your targeting sharks, eels and snapper. I also like fishing first and last light.

Western Port is the second largest bay in the state being Port Phillip Bay separated by the Mornington peninsula. It contains 2 large islands being Phillip island and French island. Western Port has an exceptional reputation for its fishing particularly its whiting, gummy shark and snapper which all come into their own seasonally.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Whiting, Gummy Shark, Snapper ( pinkies ), Flathead, Salmon, Mullet, Trevally, squid, leather jacket

I prefer this spot in the early morning at high tide I just seem to catch more fish in those conditions. You get a big run of pinkies between January and March and a big run of Salmon between June and August.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Always be careful when out on the boat. Make sure you take all the safety precautions and show mother nature the respect it really deserves.

Williamstown Fishing Gell Fergurson

Williamstown

VIDEO REPORT OF DESTINATION

https://youtu.be/CRhirud6Cqg

Williamstown is a popular and vibrant location for its range of shops, beach front and fishing locations. It has multiple well known fishing spots including the Gem Pier and the Fergurson street Pier. Its a great urban fishing location close to Melbourne. Casting out will allow you to target great species such as snapper, flathead and trevally whilst keeping your baits in close around the structure will allow you to target bream.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

snapper, Flathead, bream, silver trevally, salmon, gummy shark, garfish, Mullet, Yellowfin Scad.

Williamstown is great for kids, there are parks close by beaches to play on, piers to walk up. And in town you can explore the shops, grab and ice cream and even head for a walk at the botanical gardens. There are available public toilets and parking. However on the piers themselves keep an eye on the kids, if they get bored then rig up small as there is an abundance of small mullet they they can keep busy catching.

KNOWN HAZARDS

This area is chock full of pests like Gobies and Star fish. I could count how many times my line wasn't moving yet when I check the bait has one on the end of the line.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

Only 2 fishing lines permitted, Always carry your Victorian fishing license, and always follow catch limits. Where possible we encourage catch and release.

Wombat reservoir Fishing

Wombat Reservoir

Wombat dam is a very beautiful and scenic reservoir within the pine forest hidden towards the back of Daylesford past the railway and market grounds. It's part of the domestic water supply however it offers year round fishing with healthy trout and redfin. Yearly trout are stocked into this location making it a great fishing destination.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Redfin.

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Scrub worms, Power bait, Yabbies, Mudeye and a wide range of soft plastics & lures. Click here to see our best lures and plastics when targeting Redfin.

Fly fishing is alos a great option here.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Trout and Redfin are notorious for feeding more heavily at Dawn and Dusk. My personal favourite is fishing the sundown.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

This is a beautiful location. Its a great location for exploring and a picnic with the family. There isn't any formal sit down or bbq areas if thats whats you after then Daylesford has plenty of other options.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Snakes are a major hazard in these areas. Tiger snakes, Brown snakes and Red Bellied Black. Best bet is to wear protective gumboots and strong fabric pants.

Wurdi Buloc Fishing wurdibuloc

Wurdibuloc Reservoir

Wurdiboluc Reservoir is a large water storage system part of Barwon water that supplies water to Geelong and surrounding regions. Often renowned as the land of a thousand casts Wurdibuloc can produce some amazing Trout and Redfin but much effort is required. Its water levels currently are very low making this a challenging fishing destination. There a regular reports of nice size trout and Redfin being taken. Currently waders are a must to allow you to cast into water deep enough to attract a fish.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, & Redfin. Often reports of good sizes being taken.

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Long casting lures and Spoons are a must here. I have had great success in recent times using Nories Wasaby spoons, Pontoon 21 Paco spoons and Bullet Lures. Scrub worms, Power bait, Yabbies, Mudeye and a wide range of soft plastics & lures. Click here to see our best lures and plastics when targeting Redfin.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Trout and Redfin are notorious for feeding more heavily at Dawn and Dusk. My personal favorite is fishing the sundown.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

This is not a good fishing location for kids. Quite often you are required to walk down a challenging rock wall and there isn't much to keep the kids occupied should the bite be quiet.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Walking the rockwall can be a little hazardous so be careful. I myself have slipped down the rocks and broke my new Shimano Rod and had a few scratches and bruises for quick lapse of concentration. Getting your bait deep enough is tricky and many will wear waders and go in quite deep, again be careful when doing this and always let other know where you are fishing. Also always be on the look out for Brown and Tiger snakes which can be apparent in the immediate area.

Yarra River Fishing

Yarra River

The Yarra river is an urban icon of Melbourne. Its so well known and recognized closer to town from walking along Flinders street station, along crown casino or during the annual Moomba events, bird man rally and dragon boat events. Its also a great location to catch a boat for a cruise up and down to appreciate the Melbourne night life, sporting arenas and lighting. It travels for almost 250 kilomteres starting near the CBD and pacing all the way through the Yarra Valley ranges. However it does also offer exceptional fishing opportunities for local urban anglers.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Closer to town you can target bream, estuary perch, mullet, mulloway as you go further up you can target redfin, carp and murray cod.

BEST BAITS AND LURES

I have found the humble scrub worm to be a very effective bait for Bream in this area. Perhaps because the water can be muddy and murky a bait that has similar colors fishes well. I have also seen other anglers do very well using Pilchard strips, Bass Yabbies & Chicken strips. Soft plastics and Blades are great in this area, where you can accurately cast your lure of choice very close to structure and strike zone. Be prepared to get snagged up occasionally but the river has great structure that you can target which is usually home to many Bream.

ROD SETUP

When targeting smaller species such as bream or redfin i would highly recommend fishing as light as possible which will provide you more fun and control. To maximize your chances fish with a 2-4 or 1-3 kilo rod and a 2000 to 2500 size reel spooled with 4-6 pound braid finished with a quality fluorocarbon leader.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

All times of the day can fish well. I have caught bream and redfin during most hours of the day.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

Its a big stretch of river but close to town is a great family spot with so much to do and not far to travel to throw in a line.

KNOWN HAZARDS

The outer parts of the Yarra river have plenty of snakes so be careful and closer the the CBD the areas are highly populated so be weary of traffic and boats in the immediate area that your fishing.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

Only 2 fishing lines permitted, Always carry your Victorian fishing license, and always follow catch limits. Where possible we encourage catch and release.

This is a scenic area which presents a nice walk. It doesn't have playgrounds but can be a nice place for kids. There are plenty of ducks ready for a feed.

KNOWN HAZARDS

As with all areas that have water and high grass just always be cautious of snakes in the area.

Yea river Fishing

Yea River

The yea river is a small river with often challenging access through the Toolangi state forest but that doesn't stop keen anglers as this is a popular fishing destination from the Melba highway for those looking for a big redfin or trout.

FISH SPECIES TO TARGET

Redfin, Trout, Blackfish & Carp

BEST BAITS AND LURES

Mudeye and powerbait on a float is a great choice when targeting trout, I would do so using a very simple running sinker rig with small hook or treble, and a small pea size sinker. Other good options include scrub worms, yabbies and a wide range of soft plastics & lures. Click here to see our best lures and plastics when targeting Redfin. The old humble tassie devil can go quite well in this area. Berleying an isolated area and fishing that one spot is also a great idea when bait fishing.

MOST PRODUCTIVE TIMES

Trout and Redfin are notorious for feeding more heavily at Dawn and Dusk. My personal favourite is fishing the sundown.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

Camping is allowed in this area and for that reason its a good place to bring the family for some camping fun and fishing.

KNOWN HAZARDS

Snakes are a major hazard in these areas. Tiger snakes, Brown snakes and Red Bellied Black. Best bet is to wear protective gumboots and strong fabric pants.
